I have the same issue, I have Maya 13 installed on a Lenovo Y560p with ATI Radeon 6570M Graphics. It is kworker and cinnamon consuming all the cpu resource, they take turns changing every few seconds in the 'top' command. Hello, I also took the jump yesterday to Mint 13 Cinnamon, after several stable years with 10.04 and ubuntu. Try installing the ATI Radeon drivers instead of the Ubuntu repo ones. The result is still not perfect but it is 50% better and usable.
