Re: Who is Mints target user?
Good question I've been using Linux pretty much full time since the beginning of 2010. My first main "distro" was Ubuntu 10.04. Since then, I've repurposed/built two PCs and owned two laptops that have run every LinuxMint main edition going back to version 9, several versions of Peppermint...

Re: Cinnamon Window List tip
Thanks Sally. This was literally driving me nuts. as soon as I open five items, the launchers and menu get squished. Pretty annoying. Was thinking of going to two panels, but this'll work, maybe.

Re: System freezing - Mint 13 Cinnamon
One test i did : install a gnome-independent D.E and no crashes (openoffice insert table + vlc fullscreen + java applications successfully test ). So i think that MDM should not be the main culprit here (mostly Cinnamon badly interacting with something_TM). CoreI5/750 / 4 gig / Nvidia drivers / 32b...

Re: System freezing - Mint 13 Cinnamon
So, an interesting wrinkle: Using Cinnamon on Ubuntu 12.04, I was moving items around in the Mint menu and got the same lock up -- everything but the cursor. I had to force close and reboot but when I opened gnome log, I had nothing logged earlier than my reboot, so I can't help with the errors. I'v...

Re: System freezing - Mint 13 Cinnamon
For what it's worth, my Dell Inspiron 11z is on day two with no problems since upgrading up-gradable packages in Synaptic: There were about six packages relating to xorg and the 3.2 generic kernal. It's an easy step that requires no outside ppas, java purge and installations, etc. before those upgra...

Re: System freezing - Mint 13 Cinnamon
If anyone is really eager to use Cinnamon, I'd suggest installing Ubuntu 12.04 and grabbing the Cinnamon stable PPA with the following in terminal: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install cinnamon You'll want to add the advanced system...

Re: System freezing - Mint 13 Cinnamon
This is a pretty huge problem... I just tested the live 64-bit Mint on my System76 laptop (i5 / Intel grpahics) that's currently running Ubuntu 12.04 and I couldn't even open the menu without the same sort of lock up. It's the same thing. My Dell tester (Inspiron11z, i3, Intel graphics) with Mint is...

Re: System freezing - Mint 13 Cinnamon
And just as I finished typing that, I resumed working in Writer and it froze as soon as I opened a menu. :? Sorry to hear that... I haven't had a lock up after upgrading those packages. Something must be busted if this many people are having the same issue. I was thinking of moving my main work mac...

Re: System freezing - Mint 13 Cinnamon
Just wait a while. You'll freeze again. I don't know. I froze three times in two hours. After the upgrades, I'm approaching 6 hours without a hitch... Feeling optimistic, but not considering myself out of the woods yet. EDIT: And by 6 hours, I mean running Chrome and Firefox simultaneously (ton of ...

Re: System freezing - Mint 13 Cinnamon
Is Linux Kernal 3.4 even stable? (saw it was released a few weeks back. Missed the news...) Since upgrading packages in synaptic, I've been freeze free. For anyone not familiar, once you've opened synaptic package manager and logged in (you need your admin password), look at the main, right field wi...

Re: System freezing - Mint 13 Cinnamon
Had the same exact issue. No sure fire reason I could tell. Happened once when I opened a second session of Chrome, again when I saved a doc in LibreOffice... Memory use has been fine... Same machine ran Ubuntu 12.04 without a hitch. I noticed in Synaptic that the kernal and some x packages were mar...
