Mint gets a few good plugs on Tech Republic

Try Linux Mint instead of Ubuntu Skip Ubuntu, Use Mint! Everyone talks about using Ubuntu. Problem with Ubuntu is that they’ve bitten off a bit of the FSF philosophy regarding using “free” software and “free” drivers. That means your Nvidia and ATI cards, wireless cards, as well as some displays wi...

KDE 4.4 on the way

KDE 4.4 is going to be released tomorrow (9 Feb).

Anyone know approximately how long it will be before it makes its way over to the Ubuntu/Mint repositories?

When it is available, how would one go about upgrading KDE 4.3.5 to 4.4?

Thank you.

Re: Which version of Mint to use

I was never able to fully accept Mint with KDE 4.2.x as a replacement for Mint with KDE 3.5.10, so right now I am using Kubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) with KDE 3.5.10 installed. You can grab it here: https://wiki.kubuntu.org/Kubuntu/Kde3/Karmic However, I recently was playing around with the live CDs of open...

Re: Stuck with Mint 5

I understand the comment on rpms but Mandriva seems to have the dependencies under control and package management is much quicker than it was in the past. I mentioned Mandriva mainly because it has everything you would expect in a KDE based system by default, with the exception of K3b. (They ran ou...

Re: Helena KDE ideas

I highly recommend implementing Grub2 as Grub1 is incompatible with ext4 partitions. I also agree with having KWallet disabled by default. I have never used it as the only place I like to keep passwords is in my head. Regarding the mouse pointer's launch feedback, I would suggest setting it to "blin...

Re: How to install Firefox 3.5 on Elyssa

After much googling, I was able to install Firefox 3.5 using Ubuntuzilla. Here are the instructions I used:

How to install Firefox 3.5 on Elyssa

I'm running Mint 5 KDE based on Kubuntu 8.04. Is there a relatively painless way to upgrade Firefox 3.0.13 to Firefox 3.5? Here is what my /etc/apt/sources.list file looks like. Thanks. ## ----------------------- ## LINUX MINT REPOSITORIES ## ----------------------- ## +++ Linux Mint 5 Elyssa (stabl...

Re: Gloria KDE CE. When?

Will there be an upgrade notice when RC1 is released? Or will it have to be a full install? Also, with KDE4.3 being released, will this be in the final version? I am using version 6 and to be honest have had zero problems, so if 7 is as great, Then I to am anticipating its release date. I know ever...

Re: Gloria KDE CE. When?

I just uploaded an iso for testing by exploder and other devs. Boo Sweet! I think that Mint 7 KDE will be the best ever Linux distro shipping with KDE 4. I assume that it will be released with KDE 4.2.3, right? Hopefully the upgrade to KDE 4.3 will be smooth. As I surf around the Web, I am always p...

Re: Gloria KDE CE. When?

There was a long time span between Mint KDE 5.0 ("Elyssa") and Mint KDE 6.0 ("Felicia"). This was due to the KDE 3.5.10 -> KDE 4.1 upgrade (I believe Felicia was released at that KDE level). Now that Mint KDE 7.0 ("Gloria") is going to be released with KDE 4.2.3 (I think) there should be much less o...

Re: Getting the latest Nvidia driver installed

If you currently have the 173.xx.xx driver installed, then your gpu is probably not supported by the 180.xx series. See this list: ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/180.16/README/appendix-a.html For a list of most recent driver versions, see this: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthrea...

Getting the latest Nvidia driver installed

I installed the Nvidia driver with Envy. Currently the driver version 173.14.12, and the driver available in my package manager (nvidia-glx-new-envy) is also at 173.14.12. The Nvidia website says that the latest driver version is 180.22. How can I install this driver? Should I use Envy somehow? If I...

Re: Upgrading Mint KDE

Mint 6 KDE is supposed to use KDE4, so you would probably want to do a clean install. So the next Mint KDE CE, based on Ubuntu 8. 10 , is going to be version 6.0, and not 5. 10 ? Okay, fair enough. I agree with your suggestion to do a clean install rather than upgrade. Hopefully the KDE 4.x.x relea...

Upgrading Mint KDE

Currently I'm running Mint 5 KDE, based on K/Ubuntu 8.04. Now that Ubuntu 8.10 has been released, is there going to be a comparable upgrade for Mint users? If so, will it be possible to upgrade to this new version (i.e., retain my files and settings), rather than reinstalling the OS and starting fro...

I think you are on the right track Take a look at this blog post http://www.linuxtricks.net/index.php/archives/121/how-to-set-up-surround-51-audio-in-linux-with-alsa/ There are a few more things for ~/.asoundc than you have When I edit ~/.asoundc according to the example on that page, I get no soun...

Need to get 5.1 sound on Mint 5

I'm running Mint 5.0 KDE with a Sound Blaster Audigy SE sound card. When I play MP3s, I only get sound from the two front speakers and the center one. The two rear speakers are quiet. I tried adding this to ~/.asoundc: "pcm.!dmix { type plug slave { pcm surround51 channels 6 } } pcm.!default { type ...

If you look on http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_elyssa.php , you will see some general suggestions for upgrading the main version down near the bottom of the page. The KDE info is on http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_elyssa_kde.php . I didn't see anything relevant on the KDE page (I do not have a /home part...
