Re: Sudden loss of video, laptop still running

I updated my Intel drivers via a post a little further down the page. I haven't seen any vanishing text or icons yet, but I had a reoccurance of an issue from yesterday. My laptop screen went black, yet the computer was still on. (Clementine was still playing music) I have no idea why it did this. I...

Re: Vanishing/corrupting text in menus/programs

I wager it might be the graphic driver. I followed a link in a previous post to a site that had the Mesa 10.3 drivers, but they don't install. I tried "make"-ing the file, but it fails everytime. And the automatic Intel installs fails the distribution check. There has to be an easier way to do this.

Vanishing/corrupting text in menus/programs

Hey, I was heistant to post this since I have ordered a new laptop which uses a different graphics setup, and is much newer, but since it's gonna be another couple weeks due to customization, here's the sitch. First, specs in question. Desktop: Gnome Distro: Linux Mint 16 Petra Machine: System: Dell...

Re: Flash or html5 issue ?

I'm getting the same issue on Youtube vids. I tried disabling Flash's Hardware Acceleration, and I checked for updates in Synaptic. Nothing seems to fix it.

Re: Customise Mint X theme

Did you restart the window manager? Example: I have Cinnamon so I use Alt+F2 and type "r" to restart my gui. I've been testing themes a lot lately and several of them didn't work 100% until I restarted my WM. Icons are especially known for needing this.

Making Main Menu icon bigger than panel bar

Okay, I know a friend who did this in Fedora, and I believe Ubuntu as well. His Main Menu button is an orb that's larger than the actual bar, kinda like what *cough* win7 *cough* has. So I thought of trying to use an orb with a mint leaf in it for my menu. The first problem is that I can't seem to g...

Re: Closed/Microsoft vs GNU/Linux Assessment

Many other users have stated this, but it's first and foremost a preference thing. And secondly, it's a matter of what you can and can't do in any given OS. I've been doing techsupport for ten plus years, all on Windows, and i've seen my share of problems. Part of that is because i'm in "Tech Suppor...

Re: An idea

Well even though that screen (the DNA-esque helix and chem symbols) was made by a Windows desktop mod program called Rainmeter, I have to wonder if it can't be done. If it can't Rainmeter is open source, so maybe we'll see a port of it someday. But on the workabiliuty issue, it's like having a web p...

Re: Conky Showoff thread

I second steveking's suggestion. When I saw @Sector11's Starfleet Terminal I was awestruck. And i'm not even a hardcore ST fan. (I like Voyager a little) I have experience in coding languages like Basic/VB, RPG, HTML and i'm studying terminal... so this shouldn't be too hard. But a tutorial, perhaps...

Re: Desktop Screenshots Thread - June 2012

@lKingjr I'd love to know what theme those orange icons in black bubbles is. The screenshot you said had a "judiciously edited wall". I tried Faenza icons since I wanted a dark theme. But none of the three "dark" types has a working shutdown/logoff button. I just get invisible icons. Those icon's yo...

[SOLVED] Lightdm background change from desktop

Simple question, that may involve Ubuntu. I just installed Maya and went from MDM to Lightdm. I was trying to find out if there was a way to make the background there different from my desktop. All the sites I find usually refence Ubuntu and this file: /etc/lightdm/unity-greeter.conf. That conf file...

(SOLVED) - Black screen after login

I appreciate the tone. I'm not using Natty's repo's anymore. It appears the graphical issue is the result of a "vesa" versus "intel". The wireless issue may have been caused by my repo use but i took notes regarding what apps i was suing and I will reinstall them all manually as there weren't a lot....

Re: Black screen after login

Given that my wireless card now doesn't want to work, and that i keep getting messages about serious errors, i thought I might as well reinstall and then slowly update things from there. But I still worry that the problem of logging in and having no window manager (WM) load will come back. Am I righ...

Re: Black screen after login

If it's a knowledge issue i'm still gonna try and avoid the reinstall. I have a friend who lives nearby who is studying for his second cert from the Linux Institute., I'll call him if I need to. If it's the sources list I can fix that. I actually believe it's a driver issue, not a software/program o...

(SOLVED) - Black screen after login

Hello. Thanks for reading. I switched my laptop over from Natty Ubuntu yesterday to Maya-13 w/ Cinnmaon in 64bit. Everything went fine. I was then able to copy over my backed up files, and I ran the commands to get my sources list back and reinstall all my old programs listed in that text file you c...
