Re: Who sets the PATH?

Please provide the content of your /etc/environment. Did you reboot after changing it? (I am not sure, if this is needed, but it might be that this gets only read when booting, perhaps when login in.) There is one thing I do not understand. Following the starting post you want to add the bin folder...

Re: Who sets the PATH?

The path variable gets set for the system in /etc/environment. You can add folders for the user in the hidden file .profile in your home. There is by default the folder ~/bin set, that is the reason, why home/inge/bin is in your path list. You can either change this in your .profile file or move th...

Re: how do I add panel items to the main panel 'block'

Hi, I'm using Mate 18 on an Acer Aspire Notebook. I want to add PulseAudio Volume Control to the panel. which I was able to to. Is there a way (dconf editor) to add this panel item fix to the main panel 'block' where the Network, Sound, power manager icon sits? thanks a lot I don't think I understa...

Re: Issues with 17.3 - Is 18.1 better?

1. When starting a Drag&Drop operation, the source window jumps to the front, often overlaying the target window. Windows is better in that regard: A background window gets focus only when you release the mouse button. I never saw this as a problem. I place the windows side by side, or use F3 t...

Re: Mint 13 boot problems - total newbie

I recently inherited a homebuilt machine running Mint 13 64-bit, and have been muddling through running it with lots of Googling as I'm utterly new to Linux of any kind. With an old version like that, I think it would be better to install Mint 18 fresh. That will give you a much better starting poi...

Re: The "Everything works just fine" thread

Mint has been trouble free for me, or if I have had any problems, it was so minor that I don't remember it. I have also installed Mint on computers for other people, and so far, it just works . Most of what people say or believe about linux is based on ignorance. When compared to Linux, Windows has...

Re: Can scripts be written in javascript?

bash is making me crazy. Is there an alternative? How about javascript? Thanks for your kind response. JavaScript is fine, but you can only run it in a browser, and you need a webserver and a website to run it. It's also quite limited. If you want to run it from your desktop I don't think that's wh...

Who sets the PATH? [SOLVED]

I'm running Mint MATE 18 and have just done some rearrangement of my directory structure. During this process I discovered that my PATH has been set incorrectly. For instance I have a private "bin" direcory that I want to have first in my PATH. When I start Terminal, PATH=/home/inge/bin:/u...

Re: Mint 17 & 18: Still problems

No, you do not need a CDROM, I do not know why the sources has CDROM in it - mine was installed from USB as well. As I understand you you have upgraded your system from Mint 17.3 to Mint 18 - and back again? If this is so your system is most likely so messed up that the only solution is to format a...

Re: Mint 17 & 18: Still problems

I've not used MySQL on Mint yet, but from the errors you post it seems like there are issues with signatures. You get the question "Is GnuPG installed" - so is it? In a console try execute "gpg --version" and see what pops out.. If you get no result try to install packages "...

Re: Mint 17 & 18: Still problems

The software-sources is only available immediately after system generation. After that you can't use it to add or change repositories. I don't think that is so. I have been running Mint 17 (updated to 17.3) since it first came out, and I have used Software Sources to add repositories many times, an...

Re: Mint 17 & 18: Still problems

Has anybody found a solution to the MySQL problem?
After Mint 18 came out, I have also found it impossible to make it work in in newly installed 17.3, so I dare not upgrade!

If you have a solution, please post it here!

Re: Mint 17 & 18: Still problems

This is the 7th day. I have returned to Mint 17.3, so at least there aren't any obvious problem with the repositories. However, both MySQL 5.5 and 5.6 refuse to start. No password can be set. I've installed the necessary modules; same as I did from several earlier versions of Mint. In order to main...
