You should stick to Windows when even Notepad is considered better than Geany.

Re: [Solved] Popularity of Mint compared to Open Suse

SuSe? I must be a complete idiot, 'cause I have never ever managed to get SuSe running c.q. properly installed. Believe me, using Linux with dozens of distro's for more than 10 years now and with numerous configurations/systems, I've never pulled it off. Or..., it must be something in the air. BTW. ...

Re: I have/like Mint- but...WHY? What was the point??

For me it is a matter of FOSS and the OpenDocumentFormat (ODF). With Free & Open Source Software there is no vendor-lock-in. I, and only I, decide how my documents/data are handled. No Google, no Apple, no Microsoft will tell me what program I must use, now or in the future, in order to approach/han...

Re: Fed up with Mint

Try burning the ISO to a DVD and install that way.. USB is not always the best way to go.. Oh, is it? Been using USB installs all the time. I would suggest then when running Mint 16 and XFCE to install Multisystem. (which I use with more than 5 distros on it) There's probably more to it: why does t...

Re: Is Caja a joke?

Closing argument.(I guess) I've been using Mint Cinnamon for years now. (17.1 at the moment) My post from 2012 was altogether right but a bit premature: did not give much time to the developers, did I? (sorry, I was really disapointed at the time) So, I'm perfectly happy now with Cinnamon & Nemo, al...

Re: Help! How to show specific drive on desktop

Thanks for the reply.
Wherever mounted, there's still the problem to get it shown, with rw rights, on the desktop.
Maybe I have to look for a solution with "udev-rules".
Example at http://hackaday.com/2009/09/18/how-to-write-udev-rules/

I'll look into it and report the results later on.

Help! How to show specific drive on desktop

Linux Mint 16 / Cinnamon Hi, Here's my problem: I have a dozen or so NFS drives/partitions mounted which I do not want/need to see on my desktop. But I would like to see my Camera c.q. cardreader (with in it my labeled CF / SD cards) to show up on the desktop. Is there anyway to accomplish such an a...

Re: Is Caja a joke?

I saw the light and made Mint 16 / Cinnamon the family desktop, AND the preferred desktop for a couple of Windows converts: they love it!!
So far there's not much that can go wrong by N00B treatment.
Keep up the good work my Mint friends.

Notification for user when dessktop is scaled (Cinn.2)

Had a complaint of one of the customers that all Cinnamon desktop icons miraculously disappeard, which baffled me. In the end the cause was that while on screensaver or login the mouse moved to one of the hot corners and the desktop was scaled and since there was no window open, it showed just the b...

Re: Mint 16 cinnamon --replace

It was a fresh and only install of Mint 16 Cinnamon 64bit on a HP 6720s laptop. 1GB RAM - nothing opened: 681MB free - swap 1013MB Free 1013 MB Opening stuff(e.g. firefox, EOG, Gimp) will at some point trigger an enormous amount of disk i/o (iowait: 94% with swappiness=10) and a high CPU usage (100%...

Re: Is Caja a joke? (NO)

Using Mint 13 Mate for some six months now and Caja's development has gone the right way and is (almost but not quite) up to par with Nautilus' functions/options: bravo!! So, one year later and no longer is Caja a Joke although I'm missing some vital functions: - edit context-menu (I don't need Wine...

Re: Is Caja a joke?

Although the fork thingy is well known, we were to accept a better Gnome, since the old one no longer did suffice.(??) Well i.m.h.o. a better Gnome means at least a file manager that equals or, when possible, excels the old one. I really can't bear losing all the tweaks and mods of Nautilus, it woul...

Re: Is Caja a joke?

Caja is NOT basically Gnome 2.32's Nautilus. For one, it' s lacking all kind of modification possibilities. Although "Nautilus Scripts" can be integrated, there are to many functions that are missing vs Gnome 2's Nautilus. Must be, otherwise there would be no reason to alter the file manager and call...

Is Caja a joke?

Hmm, are the developers of Mate taking the Mickey out of it's followers? Caja can't be seen as a mature file manager to replace Nautilus. Can it? In all the mentioned pro's and con's about Mint 13, the absence of Nautilus and/or the presence of Caja is not mentioned once, which I can understand now ...
