It does that for me too. Probably related to some standard logging activities or something like that.is it normal that sometimes when I move the mouse or write like here the hard disk led turns on and off quickly even with no application open?

Re: Disk utility - SMART warning - false positive?
Yeah, I do backup my stuff regularly - always have. The latest backups I did maybe two hours ago :D I am doing an extended SMART test as we speak. If the nasty stuff hits the fan at some point, I have already looked up some emergency options  My main concern is this online course which I have ...

Disk utility - SMART warning - false positive?
Just checked Disk utility (Palimpsest) today - and it reports "Disk has a few bad sectors" It gives a warning for "Reallocated sector count". The values are as follows: Normalized: 100 Worst: 100 Threshold: 5 Value: 131078 sectors Also, in the "Reported uncorrectable...

Re: Oracle Java 7 vulnerable
Ahh, so it's Java7, not Java6...? *phew* :o :) On my system I get this when I run "java -version" in the Terminal: java version "1.6.0_24" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.11.3) (6b24-1.11.3-1ubuntu0.12.04.1) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.0-b12, mixed mode) So this sh...

Re: Flash-plugin heats up laptop really bad when playing vid
Yeah, I think it was either maybe the ticking off the "Use hardware acceleration" thing in Flash settings, or the use of "ondemand" instead of "conservative" in CPU frequency scaling settings. Or both of them. :) Youtube videos still stir up the CPU's a bit, but at leas...

Flash-plugin heats up laptop really bad (solved)
Hi, I have a bit of a problem with Flash. Since I installed Linux Mint 13 (MATE version), I've had heating issues while playing Flash videos (from Youtube mostly). Playing Flash videos in a browser (Google Chrome) causes my laptop CPU's to heat up all the way up to 90 degrees Celsius, which is obvio...

Re: State of virus scanners on Linux?
<- Exactly what nomko said. I think the virus scanner situation in Linux will get a boost only if Linux becomes a much more popular platform for home desktop use. That would probably bring up more viruses and malware directed specifically at Linux systems, hence the bigger need for more up-to-date v...

Also, you can read man pages in your internet browser as regular html pages...
Install this in your Synaptic package manager or Software Center:
man2html
Then type this to your browser's URL bar:
And save it as a bookmark

Re: "Untitled window" on bottom panel?
AFAIK I'm using only the "basic" MATE setup without any extra effects. I'm not sure if Mint/MATE uses some Compiz decorations as a default? EDIT *checked out Synaptic really quickly* I have the basic Compiz core packages installed, but I believe they come as default. I'm not sure if they a...

Re: State of virus scanners on Linux?
It might be that these virus scanners just won't work on a 64-bit systems too well?

Re: "could not write bytes: Broken pipe" is message at shutd
Hmmm. Now when I think of it, I haven't seen this "broken pipe" message lately (at least it doesn't appear every time I boot or shut down the computer).
Maybe some update actually fixed it?

Re: State of virus scanners on Linux?
Just tried Avast myself, and I have to say I am not impressed :( I use 64-bit system, and the downloaded .deb is... 32-bit. Okay, installed it anyway, it might still work... Got the free registration key, put it in before I could even open the program, the program opens... and it is just ugly, like ...

"Untitled window" on bottom panel?
Yesterday I noticed that a previously unknown icon/thumbnail named "Untitled window" had appeared in the bottom panel (besides the Menu button). When I click it, nothing happens (it doesn't open up anything) and it does not respond if I right-click it and choose "Close". I can on...

Re: Why are my applications not the latest possible version?
I've been wondering why I still have Chromium 18, when 19 or even 20 is out I'm also running the 18 version of Chromium. I installed the Google repository for Chrome and it seems to be update nicely, Firefox is version 13.0.1 (which is the latest stable version AFAIK), but Chromium seems to be stuc...

It is indeed possible - last time I had Windows on my computer was in early 2008...My goal is to try and live with only Free "open source" software for a year to see if it is indeed possible.

Re: Bootable USB for Ubuntu via Mint Mate?
Unetbootin is also a nice program for making bootable USB sticks. I'm pretty sure it should be in the repositories, although the more recent versions are available on it's website. If you get the program from the website, make sure to make it executable: right-clicking the program opens up a menu, f...

Re: How do I avoid hackers?
Another tip is to install programs only from trusted sources, such as the official repositories, and avoid third-party PPAs. Also always install critical security updates. While surfing the web, make use of the different security add-ons available for browsers like Firefox and Chrome/Chromium, such ...

Re: Mint 12 to 13
I have been told that it is generally advisable to do a clean install instead of upgrading. Upgrading (at least in Ubuntu) could bring with it all sorts of "interesting" problems  I upgraded several times when I was using Ubuntu, and usually it went without problems, but at least on...

Re: "could not write bytes: Broken pipe" is message at shutd
Yeah, I also have the same "broken pipe" message three times on my Mint 13 MATE, and has been there since the first boot. But it doesn't seem to interfere with my normal desktop usage in any way, so for me it is just a cosmetic thing. Ubuntu also used to spit all sorts of cryptic messages ...
