What about tablet powered by Linux Mint?

Hello! In the few past years the tablet has become more and more popular due to it's portability and form factor and the recent technology provides powerful hardware and more capabilities. I know that Android is now ruling the tablet market but it seems to me that it is (still) not providing a full ...

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

I've been a Gnome user since early Linux Mint editions but in the past few months I searched for alternatives and I ended using XFCE. I find it stable and feature rich and it could look pretty too :D In combination with LMDE it seems to be the best choice for me. Magnificent job, Linux Mint Team!

Re: what's going on? ( new user problems..fan )

Hello! I recently installed Linux Mint 9 on my HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop and noticed a very similar behaviour of my fan. It appears just a moment before the login screen and lasts 4:59 minutes. I measured it with a stopwatch and I was surprised that it was the same amount reported by Killzone3. The ...

DDR3 RAM appears like DDR2

Hello! I recently built a new PC with 2x1GB of DDR3 RAM and integrated ATI HD 4200 GPU. In BIOS I configured the RAM at 1333MHz (dual channel) and configured the GPU to use computer's RAM too. Everithing seems to work fine, but I noticed something strange. The ATI Catalist driver has a tool to confi...

Re: how to enable wireless on laptop

Hello ! Did you try to make the ndiswrapper workaround from the MintWifi HowTo (it starts here: http://www.linuxmint.com/wiki/index.php/MintWifi#4_Install_the_Driver)? You have to find your windows wireless driver and load it in the ndiswrapper like it's described in the HowTo. Did it work? Greeting...

Re: No Wireless HP ZV5000

Hello, all!

I have a bcm4311 on a HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop and I found a driver called Broadcom STA Wireless Driver in the Hardware Drivers section that, after being activated, worked for me. Maybe it is possible to work with bcm4306 too.

Hope it could help,

Re: how to enable wireless on laptop

Hello ! Maybe your wireless card needs a driver. Sometimes you need a different driver from the default for a specific card, or to activate one from the Hardware Drivers section. Did you try with the drivers in the Hardware Drivers section in Control Center? If there isn't something that you could u...

Re: Laptop Hard Drive

Hello, all! A few days ago I did a fresh default install of Mint 7 on ext4 partitions (HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop, WDC harddrive). When on power supply, I didn't have the load cycling problem! On battery - something like 1 cycle per minute. I suppose that the good result on power was caused by the fu...

Re: Laptop Hard Drive

I have an HP laptop running Phoenix BIOS. The load cycle is doing about 90 an hour. These fixes have done nothing to lower that. However, my laptop never makes a sound. I sit here pressing "UP" and "ENTER" to run smartcrt over and over, watching my cycles climb, but never a sound. There are very in...

Re: Open Source Security

Hello !

What about those permanently monitoring anti-virus applications, which are essential for the windowz users to stay clear of viruses? Does a Linux user need this sort of software to be protected from viruses or blocking intrusions with a firewall does this work?

Thank you,

Open Source Security

Hello ! Today I looked for a firewall to install and I found open source software. I taught to myself: "this is a software that catches the "bad guys", but it's open - everybody can see the code...." . Well, I know that it's much more complicated, but what makes these security applications that good...

Re: Laptop Hard Drive

Hello ! The last few days I made an experiment. I read a post ( from launchpad if I'm correct.... ) about solving the Load_Cycle problem with making some activity of the hdd - a script touches a file. So I made a script that uses touch command ( touch - change file timestamps ) with -a option ( -a c...

Hello !

I tried to increase the writeback time like it's shown in the LessWatts' site from Fred's post. It says Permission Denied even when executed with sudo. What am I missing?

Re: sudo gedit

Hello ! A good way to test if it is user based settings that are causing the problem would be to create another user account and then login as that user and see if you still have the same problem. Try this and report back :) Thank you for the clue ! I did that and found that it works with the new ac...
