Re: Wine

For some "stand-alone" programs it works... obviously as karichen said, for programs which needs libraries ecc... you have to install them through wine because it uses its own registry. The fact is that if you check that you are able to use all your windows programs through wine, then ther...

Re: Graphic Vesa in...?

It seems you have drivers installed fine.
The slow down is not necessairly a video issue, what is your RAM usage and CPU % idle ?

EDIT:Oh i was forgetting, have you already tried to disable the desktop effects? (Compiz or so on)

Re: done with windows-I think!

Well now we have a bit more infos. If your HP machine is 512 K RAM , i feel to suggest you a light linux distro like Puppy Linux, or Lubuntu 12.04 which i'm currently using on a 1GB RAM machine which had some slow downs with multi tasking on Mint 13 KDE.

Re: done with windows-I think!

My suggestions are: 1-download linux distributions from the official sites (eg. for Mint go to http://www.linuxmint.com) there you will find all the still supported distributions and the specifications. 2-The file you will download is an *.iso file as Pilosopong told you previously, that is an image...

Re: apt-get update not working

Be sure in the sources.list file you do not have the same source written 2 times then,
Try :

Code: Select all

sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists

and

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

Re: apt-get update not working

Are you using a live CD? I don't understand if you have the same issue you had on february with the same distro. If you are still using katya, please type in terminal: sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list type here the output, or if you wanna try to do it yourself, just change in every address, the word ...

1st avoid to use .deb packages directly when not necessairy, use software manager or obviously better Apt to install packages from repos. Now open a terminal and type (copy&paste): sudo apt-get remove skype then: sudo add-apt-repository “deb http://archive.canonical.com/ $ (lsb_release-sc) partn...

Re: My first time, and i'm nervous...

Those are a lot of questions: 1- Wubi is never suggested as a way to use Linux and Windows, that's because with time going by, it often meets system files corruption, and then if you want to remove it it's often not so easy to do it cleanly, it leavs boot configurations behind etc... The best way to...

Re: no pw prompt for cmd: sudo <app>, eg Launch bar, kb hotk

The sudo command is thought to be an interactive command, not for a script usage. If you want to make a script usable by everyone you should change the sudoers privileges. However the unsafe way is that to use the -S option in this way: #Example of a script with non-interactive sudo #!/bin/bash echo...

Re: Ditching Windows

Linux console in modern distros like Mint, which by default includes most packages and codecs you need to perform most common tasks, is only usually needed for fixing purposes. It's true that many times what doesn't work with GUI works from prompt, but it's also true that to learn the very bases of ...
