Re: Why mint hates KDE?!

If "a few of you" you're including me, I never suggested the OP try another distro other than to tell the OP he wasn't looking hard enough and I have too much respect for Mint to mentioned another distro by name on their forum.

Re: Why mint hates KDE?!

Currently, I am using Linux Mint 13 KDE is really super stable, very efficient, no complaints. Same here, been using 13 LTS since it came out and it's been superb. As I mentioned above, the only thing stopped me to leave Mint KDE is good support of proprietary drivers which is missing in Arch, Open...

Re: Does't ask for password: Authetication went wrong

Same thing happened on my laptop, but not my desktop; after an update, the time changed to UTC instead of my local time. Had to go to > Digital clock settings, instead of > Adjust Date and Time..., to apply the correct settings. Don't know about the password deal, in fact, I'm not sure it asked for ...

Re: Default file associations?

What is the program I'm looking for called? And is there a simple way to restore all the defaults that mint has? GDebi Package Installer - go to system settings, file associations, applications, and scroll down to x-deb and adjust the application preference order. Creating a new user should restore...

Re: Get back my unused hard drive space

It is easily do-able with a GUI but it takes a long, long amount of time. I've recently performed similar operations on a KDE install. Still, it's very important to backup your critical data. Download and burn a copy of GParted Live CD. http://gparted.sourceforge.net/index.php GParted Live was creat...

Re: Strange Lockup & Unresponsive Desktop

In my opinion, Akonadi, Nepomuk, and Strigi are the worst features foisted upon KDE4 users. The KDE4 developers must have thought bugs fixes were boring and figured, 'let's do something cool, with really weird names' so that's what we got. To put it bluntly, those programs are Windows like in that t...

Re: First Time Linux Install Q

Is there a way of shrinking the existing partition and keeping its data? The disk was defragged. Shrink the C: partition when in Windows. You shouldn't lose data but it's best to have backups. Install Linux in the remaining space by creating ext4 partitions. There's plenty of info here on the forum...

Re: Maya/13--Desktop goes crazy after a couple of days

Hey LindseyD.

No apologies necessary. It'll be great if the case cleaning helps with your problem.

It would be beneficial to get a can of compressed air and blow off the CPU and video card heat sink fins too, preferably outdoors.

Re: Maya/13--Desktop goes crazy after a couple of days

I doubt Firefox is the cause of the problem but rather a symptom. The unstable nature would seem to point to a hardware problem. Have you cleaned inside the computer case and components of dust, dirt, and hair. You'd be surprised how much gets sucked into the case. While you have the panels off the ...

Re: Kmail issue

Assuming you're use POP3, go back to where you set up your account receiving and look for > Enable interval mail checking and uncheck it. I hope that info is still correct but I no longer use Kmail since the KDE folks hooked in akonadi, nepomuk, strigi, and kwallet into what was once the best email ...

Re: How much space should I leave for a new user?

I just checked and my /home partition and the hidden folders and files take up about 285 MB. Of course my other folders with all my precious data in the /home partition: Document, Downloads, Dropbox, Fonts, Mail, Movies, Music, Photos, Pictures, Saved (for misc. saved files) is about 67 GB, with ano...

Re: KDE show virtual keyboard on the login screen

Thank you for taking the time to provide me with an alternative. Unfortunately, I will never compromise the security of a PC by leaving it "naked" so to speak. I would like to stress the importance of having a good password which could prove a deterant I have just come back to KDE after K...

Re: KDE show virtual keyboard on the login screen

Sorry, can't help with the virtual keyboard.

But an option would be to enable auto-login. It would be in > system settings > login screen. Under the Convenience tab, check mark Enable Auto-Login and select the user. You'll basically be able to bypass the login screen this way.

Have you gone into Synaptic and searched for nvidia. I've had no problems installing the 295 drivers on my system.

Not sure what you mean by "every time I start the downloader" though.

Hope this helps.

Re: How to resttore defaul settings?

Open Dolphin file manager and in the menu bar click > View > Show hidden files. Right click on the .kde folder and rename it to .kde.old. Log out and back in. The .kde folder will be recreated with default settings. If everything is the way you want it, you can then delete the renamed folder .kde.old.

Re: Strange performance issue

My kded4 is steady at 22MB but I'm not doing anything memory intensive. To find any problem it's best to use a process of elimination, but first I'd making sure my system was up to date in Update Manager. I wouldn't be using desktop effects or anything else that might be pulling resources. Keep ever...
