Re: apt-get suddenly speaks Chinese?!

I have noticed that Chinese seems to be installed by default on systems. My system is in English, but Chinese is also listed as installed in the language options. It seems strange that this should be the case

Re: Unable to install apps with Software Manager

The software manager is in a package called mintinstall. If you try to install it as follows it should offer to upgrade it if an upgrade is available: $ sudo apt-get install mintinstall As for live USBs with persistent storage, I have had no problems with the Ubuntu startup disk creator. It is calle...

Re: password question

If I check the box that I want Firefox, etc. to REMEMBER my login/password info, I think you might be confusing passwords stored by Firefox with those stored by websites in the form of cookies. You can see which logins Firefox is storing in its password manager by going to Edit -> Preferences -> Se...

Re: 32-bit on 64-bit

I too need to run some 32-bit software and I have installed ia32-libs. I have been using my 64-bit system like this for over a year now and I have had no problems. The packages live quite happily next to the 64 bit versions and programs use whichever one they were compiled for. That package automati...

Re: samba browsing across subnets via vpn

OK, Solved! The problem was pretty simple. There is a second network card in the server that is unplugged and was setup for DHCP. This is the reason that the server had two ip addresses and that one of them was an unconfigured link-local address. Samba by default uses all network interfaces, and so ...

Re: samba browsing across subnets via vpn

I think I have found out where the problem lies, but I'm still not sure how to solve it. I noticed that, in my last post, this error message in the client nmbd log was new: register_name_response: WINS server at IP 192.168.1.2 rejected our name registration of MATT<20> IP 10.21.150.185 with error co...

Re: samba browsing across subnets via vpn

OK, so I tried it with the IP x.x.x.185 but it still doesn't work. From the nmbd log on the client (see below) it seems to be failing at the WINS registration stage with error code 5. I've had a quick search, but so far I haven't managed to find out what that means. I've tried to check the logs on t...

Re: samba browsing across subnets via vpn

Yes, I can ping 192.168.1.2 (and the gateway (192.168.1.1) or any other computer on the remote network). Computers on the remote network can ping my computer (10.21.150.184). Unless this reply is not from my computer but from the VPN gateway? I can also connect to windows shares by using the IP addr...

Re: Linuxant hsfmodem Driver Instructions please (LM13 Mate)

Hi, Compiling a kernel to install a modem driver does seem a bit extreme :) There are some instructions for the Conexant driver here, but they are based on installing a pre-compiled .deb http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Conexant_HSF_modem_drivers#The_Linuxant_hsf_driver Debian: run # dpkg -i hsfblablab...

Re: samba browsing across subnets via vpn

Sorry, it was a typo. The mask is /30 not /32 (ie. 255.255.255.252). This PC is at 10.21.150.184 and I guess 10.21.150.187 is the broadcast address.
The local subnet is 192.168.0.0/24. The remote network is 192.168.1.0/24.

Re: samba browsing across subnets via vpn

Hi, I get:

Code: Select all

$ nmblookup ds508
querying ds508 on 192.168.0.255
querying ds508 on 10.21.150.187
name_query failed to find name ds508
ds508 is at 192.168.1.2, which is accessible through the 10.21.150.187/32 subnet I defined for the VPN.

Re: No Internet in Virtual Box

An alternative to manually entering DNS settings is to run this in a terminal: VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --natdnshostresolver1 on This way it will work with whatever DNS your host is currently using. samba browsing across subnets via vpn [solved]

I have set up an IPSec VPN from a machine running mint 14 (64 bit) using a Shrew client (version 2.2.0) and connecting to a Netgear VPN gateway/router. This seems to be working fine - I can ping clients on the remote network and ssh into a NAS box running linux and I can connect to windows shares by...
