Re: Mint install on Dell M6500?

If you are uncertain of your ability to install an operating system, make the boot stick for Mint. If you can do that successfully, you are most likely capable of the rest. My advice is to keep your Windows (for now) and do a fresh install of Mint on another machine. Depending on your finances you m...

If you deleted files using a file-browser, the files were probably moved to 'Trash', and will still use up disk space until you empty the trash; you should see a Trash icon around to check.
Also, if you select "Move to Trash" for files on a USB, it creates a Trash folder on your USB drive.

I like Pluma and Leafpad. You will have to install them which is easy to do with Synaptic Package Manager.

The easiest way to do this is to put the xrandr commands into your .profile file. This is executed at startup. This lives in home, just add the commands at the end.
Agreed. Also, keep a copy of this file for when you switch machines or do a clean install.

I also recommend going to https://pcpartpicker.com/ to make sure the hardware itself is compatible (and to comparison shop).

Re: Best way to set up web start page?

I maintain my own html file. I keep it on the hard drive of all my computers and use it as my start page and home page. I see no reason why you couldn't store it on the cloud (but several why you shouldn't :) ).

I seldom use books and mostly use internet searches. However, since I use the terminal a lot, there is an old Unix book that sits on my shelf that gets pulled off a couple times a year.

Re: vi command

In command mode (hit Esc to get there), type ":200,$d" then press Enter. In command mode, "." repesents the line you are on, "$" represents the last line, and "%" represents all lines.

Re: Java consuming RAM

I use the Waterfox browser. I noticed with both Mint 18 and 19 that my computer essentially comes to a halt when certain web pages are displayed. I'm not certain as to why but I suspect that they are running Java. I installed the Stop All Button addon in my browser to prevent those pages from reload...

Re: Saving listed URL's.

Another option is to create your own web page that contains all the links that you want. So it doesn't matter what OS or browser you use. Simply open the page (or make it your home page) that contains all the bookmarks.

Re: How To make custom links?

BTW, I use Linux mint 18.3 Cinnamon 32-bit. but I haven't yet had any luck. Isn't there like some sort of 'link file' That I can make, that just requires some line of code? I just want to change the name of my shortcut. I have aliases written into my .cshrc file (note I'm using C-shell) that I use ...

Right click on the directory and select "Make Link". Right click the link and rename it. Move the link to wherever you want it.
How do I right-click "Computer"?
I use Mate. I can put "Computer" on my Desktop by going into Control Center, selecting Desktop Settings, and selecting Computer.

Re: Linux Mint 18.3 Freezing while away from computer

Do you have a browser running? I have noticed a web site or two that jams my browser and my computer and essentially renders me powerless. This has happened with different machines and different versions of Mint. My work around is to install the Stop All Button addon. It keeps sites form running amo...

Re: I wonder - stay with Windows - switch to Linux Mint?

I can't put all my money into a build(we're poor), try linux, and then find out I want to go back to windows... So I need to iron out all my concerns BEFORE I start building. My two cents. Since Linux is free, this will not cost any more than building a Windows machine in the first place. Hard driv...
