Re: Illegible characters
I get those when I have my ram clocked incorrectly and my computer is in the midst of crashing. You also might have a dying harddrive. Do tell, have you booted off a LIVE DVD and does it behave the same?

Re: Trouble with aliases and .bashrc
the Terminal application known as gnome-terminal does not read .bashrc, but rather .profile. The behaviour, in short, is as follows: bash started as an interactive login shell: reads ~/.profile bash started as an interactive non-login shell: reads ~/.bashrc I believe that bashrc is used for scripts....

Re: Not getting any Youtube sound in Chromium - *sometimes*
Sometimes my audio gets set for the output device os SPDIF, this is usually the digital sound chanel sent rhough the HDMI port of your audio card, rather than your motherbord's sound card.

Re: Unable to see any activated desklets
I have been able to add desklets to my desktop in such a way that they don't appear on the desktop. I have a dual monitor configuration, and my Primary monitor is on the right. My primary monitor is taller than my secondary monitor (on the left). When the desklets appear on the desktop they take the...

Re: share drive
Simplest file share ever, setup SSH on your server. Then use filezilla client to SFTP. 1) Simple to setup, sudo apt-get install ssh filezilla 2) Simple to use, your password is already your system user. 3) Available Everywhere. Programs like winSCP, Filezilla, sshfs make for many options 4) Secure, ...

Re: Not getting any Youtube sound in Chromium - *sometimes*
Not sure, but this could be an issue of your webbrowser playing videos with HTML5 video VS Flash Video. If you choose "Sound Settings', in the "Applications" tab, are there individual sound bars?

I belive you are looking for a dyndns.org account. Years ago I configured a linux server to update the dyndns.org IP address upon sucessfull DHCP of the ethernet card. So I'm sure you can do it too.

Re: Suspend on lid close when connected to external monitor
Often sleep and low power modes are custom to the motherboard. Laptops tend to have highly modified and non standard low power states. Also most laptops pull air through the keyboard, and will tend to overheat things like your harddrive and video card if your screen is closed. I've heard of taking a...

Re: Window Edges Deformed
There can also be an aspect ratio mismatch. Sometimes when booting the live CD on a computer connected HDMI to a 1080p screen, i get strange reported resolutions which arn't the same aspect ratio, thus relating to a pixle mismatch and dithering and anti-aliasing effects occuring.

Re: Window Edges Deformed
I have a bad DVI and VGA minitor cable which creates ghosting to mainly vertical lines on the screen. The higher the resolution the worse it seems to get. Perhaps try swapping out video cables.

Re: XP doesn't recognize .iso files
Update on good programs in windows. The site http://www.ninite.com is a lot like a package manager. It simplifies the installs of programs, without the nagging "Next" buttons on the installation wizards. I suggest using this downloader because the download link at imgburn's own site instal...

Re: Dual booting from second hard drive
Install or keep windows intact and don't change boot settings for your primary HD. Instead: Plug in yoru second harddrive. Physically Remove your primary HD when you boot from LM Installer DVD. You second (and only) hardrive should be the only partitions detected. This will force LM instller to plac...

Re: XP doesn't recognize .iso files
Also be carefull with imgburn, it used to be opensource, now its open sourced mallware drive by downloader. It mucked up my windows installation. Aparently, it is a silent downlaoder for mallware which downloads more mallware, takes over home page, installs widgets on desktop. They do have an opt ou...

I too would like to be able to do LVM on a crypted install. I do not believe this to be a Help Desk, where it would be approparate to demand and yell. Perhaps you can take a reapproach to this using some persuasive writing skills. In the end, if you want a feature, perhaps you should petition others...

Re: Raid 5 with USB disks
While I appreciate trying new things. RAID is not a backup nor was it intended to run over USB. I can go on and on about technical details concerning the futile nature of your efforts. May I suggest you purchase a NAS, having the RAID connect to SATA drives directly is the way to go. Also RAID is no...
