Software security (question about Ubuntu Pro)
I've been running various linux distros for over 20 years, but I've pretty much settled on debian based ones...and of these Linux Mint and LMDE are my main ones, but I also use Ubuntu mainly to keep up with it since Mint is based on Ubuntu. When Ubuntu diverged from the debian base, the Mint develop...

Mint 21 weak on ssh connections
I like to maintain an ssh connection to a debian server with whichever linux distro I have booted on my main computer. I alternate between Mint, LMDE and Ubuntu...usually the latest LTD. These connections have always been very stable. Previous Mint_20 was stable...the connection almost never broke. ...

Re: [RESOLVED]GUI system backup software: What do YOU use?
Tho this thread is a bit old, I did read thru it and would like to add a comment or two. Similar to Lady Fitzgerald, I use a separate drive/partition for my data...not $home! I simply call it "data" and mount as: $home/myself/data. I set up my backup system well before the advance of Times...

Re: Media server to replace Twonky
There should be no problem as to UMS and headless? It's interface is via browser, not local. thx, I've read more and am going forward with UMS. Looks like it requires Java (Oracle's one)...not wonderful, but I installed it. I have a wired connection from my debian server to the main TV area, so ple...

Media server to replace Twonky
Set up Twonky Media Server years ago to send home videos on my PS3. It's on a headless Debian server. Stopped working recently...I think it's now a paid app. Anyway, I need a replacement. I've been reading here about UMS (Universal Media Server) and that sounds like a good prospect. But the one prob...

Logout & save session on Mint 19.3
It's installed on an older MacBook. Standard suspend whether thru the command or closing the lid fails...it won't resume. However, I can logout and then close the lid. After a few minutes, the pulsing Mac "sleeping" light comes on. Now opening the lid brings up the login screen and I can l...

VPN strategy for a home network
As a trial, I installed Wireguard on a few machines and my Apple mobile phone. Testing at home showed good connectivity and little drop-off in speed. Not so with the cell phone away from home...very slow and dodgy. Also, my setup is encrypted, but not anonymous. I like Wireguard as it is integral to...

Re: Thunderbird strategy
An update, about a month later. What I did. Updated mint-20 to mint-21, updated lmde-4 to lmde-5 and updated ubuntu-21? to ubuntu-22-jellyfish. Removed thunderbird-mozill-build where present and installed TB from the normal repos. My previous TB setup had 5 email accounts and included both pop and i...

Re: Same Firefox profile on multiple machines?
One possible solution to the problem of the different versions of firefox that you are using in LMDE would be to symlink not only the hidden .mozilla folder, ie the profile for firefox but also to download the current .tar.gz archive of firefox, extract that and symlink the extracted firefox folder...

Re: Same Firefox profile on multiple machines?
IF Firefox is the only thing that is giving you issues, I just use FF synch which works across all my devices wingers included. click on the hamburger menu in my case the first item is my login name, I can't recall what a new firefox setting is, it could be "Set up Synch" or "Log In ...

Re: Same Firefox profile on multiple machines?
Personally I just copy .mozilla from machine to machine and use FF to sync across machines. That works for me even across distros (so long as I keep consistent FF versions everywhere. OK, when you do that, do you get the same FF profile on each machines, or do you have to create a new one each time...

Same Firefox profile on multiple machines?
My main machine multi-boots, mint, and 2 other distros. A common 2 TB data drive ( data ) mounts in my /home directory like this: /home/feffer/data . Can I move my /home/feffer/.mozilla directory to ~/home/data and symlink back getting Firefox to share the same profile whichever distro is booted? Th...

Re: Server ssh access fails on Mint 21
It looks like your new mint machine does not accept the private key. As you are trying to connect as root, ron's public key must be added to mint's /root/.ssh/authorized_keys file. If you are able to log in using a password, then ssh-copy-id can do it for you. It will ask for the password so it can...

Re: Server ssh access fails on Mint_21
Researched this a LOT and still no joy. On my multi boot machine with LMDE-4, Ubuntu-20x and Mint 21...only Mint 21 seems unable to handle ssh correctly. The others and previous Mint-20 handled access over the LAN and with key-pair access from the server for cron backup w/o problem. I've tried redoi...

Re: VIM, who is it really for?
Over the years, I have definitely come across distributions which didn't include actual Vim, but most do at least come with Vim Tiny (a la Vi). So, they do exist!... Mint, Ubuntu, LMDE and probably many others come with vim-tiny. If you're used to standard Vim, the "tiny" one will ball yo...

Re: Server ssh access fails on Mint_21
I'm wondering if open-ssh in Mint 21 needs different ciphers or protocols in the ssh config file? These do get upgraded and I had to change ciphers a few years ago. Or maybe the identity file format/code? In any case, something is different in this version and my trouble-shooting hasn't uncovered it...

Re: Unable to download files to network location
You could mount the network share on your local machine. Maybe something like this: /home/alex/data where "data" is the network share. Under "data" you could move your standard directories like downloads, music, documents etc. In the browser preferences where it asks about downlo...

Server ssh access fails on Mint 21
I use cron to run my backup script from my debian server to my LAN machines including lmde, mint and ubuntu. Using public/private keys, this has been working fine for several years. Recently did a clean install to mint_21. While mint_20 worked fine, I'm getting failure on mint_21. As far as I can te...

Broken pipe-line
My network has a debian server connecting 3 PCs and 2 laptops. My main PC multi-boots 3 linux distros including mint 21 (a fresh install). I usually mount my server in one tab of the terminal via ssh whichever linux I have booted. I frequently refer to it. This has always been very stable in all dis...

Re: Thunderbird strategy
Thx for the comments. I read Muffin Man's link comments about Snap...I didn't realize it was just a renamed/updated Ubuntu app store. Clearly not what I want to use. My problem with TB was that it started needing new profiles. I was able to avoid this for a while by installing the Mozilla-Build, but...
