virtualenv

A problem which I have seen over the years is the gradual pollution of an installed Linux Mint. You know, wanting to try a non-repo software, projects which require seemly loads of different packages & once the project is over, no easy way to remove the extra packages, etc. Python has the "virtualen...

The dkms is broken in rtl8812au-dkms package and it works better if you use a github solution
That explains a lot. Thank you. Can anything be done to fix it manually (besides using the Github version)?

Was this a driver that you added manually?
Actually, it was added via the Synaptic Package Manager.

RTL 8812au driver missing

In Linux kernel version 5.0.0-25-generic , the RTL 8812au driver was present in that release. Wireless connectivity worked flawlessly. Recently, the Update Manager upgraded the kernel to version 5.0.0-27-generic . Release version 5.0.0-27-generic lacks the RTL 8812au kernel driver. I tried the RTL8x...

Re: Copy / Transfer Files

Thank you for the tip on how to limit the dirty pages. I have been seeing the cache grow until it starts consuming the swap space. And while there is a manual work-around, that method was too clumsy for myself. Modifying the /etc/sysctl.conf file is a much cleaner solution.

RT5372 USB Wireless problem in LM19

The adapter does work and connects without issues. After upgrading to LM 19, I now have a peculiar problem with a restart of the system. I have a work-around for the problem. Details: Start the system from a power-up - everything works as expected Do a restart via the "Quit" menu and the wireless wo...

ImageMagick binaries

I was able to choose ImageMagick as a viewing option for pictures, but lately, that option no longer appears in the menu (open with). I checked the properties of the ImageMagick package (Installed Files). Apparently, the ImageMagick package (image manipulation programs -- binaries) in the repository...

[SOLVED} Autoexec won't work in dosbox

Been running dosbox for some time now. It suddenly stopped mounting the c drive directory (as dictated in the autoexec section of the dosbox configuration file). In retrospect, it was a case of stubbing one's toes (ouch!). I had changed the desktop file for dosbox to execute "firejail dosbox". Big m...

Re: How to upgrade to Linux Mint 19

Only one fly-in-the-ointment with the upgrade from 18.3 to 19.0, I did not have the locales-all package installed prior to running the mintupgrade command. The installation process complained about not being able to set the locales LC_ALL variable. As a consequence, the dbus-x11 package would not in...

Re: Failed LM 19 MATE upgrade

I read the excellent reference link. Thank you. The MESA issue appears to be the cause of the problem as I remember the upgrade wanting to remove a bunch of stuff. I did not pay enough attention to what was being removed as I normally see that sort of action and assumed that the packages were just o...

Failed LM 19 MATE upgrade

Linux Mint 18.3 MATE desktop Good news: LM 19 is now available. Timeshift backup works like a champ. Bad news: After the LM 19 upgrade, the title bars on windows were missing. Menu scrolling did not work. The incorrect nVidia driver was installed (easily fixed!). Workspace switcher did not work (Pan...

[SOLVED] Restrict desktop to one graphics card

I'm not sure exactly where to ask this question. I have 2 graphic cards (same manufacturer) and wanted to use one of them for a non-desktop application (like AI research as an example). How do I tell Linux Mint to use just one of those cards and not bind a new xserver output on the other one? If no ...

Re: Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot a freezing cinnamon desktop?

Not one to sit by and wait for more information, I dug into the desktop freezing situation (yes my desktop is doing the freeze up with the mouse working, but no response when I click on stuff). Based on the posted hardware readout, the other gentleman and I share a commonality - we both use wireless...

[SOLVED?] Cinnamon halts after several Suspend sessions

I like to be able to suspend the machine to save on power while not using it. Why not power off the machine? The startup from the suspend mode is a whole lot quicker than from a cold start. What I have found is that after 4 (or maybe 5) startups from the suspend mode, the cinnamon desktop (not Linux...

Re: Firejail as security sandbox for your programs

Like other folks, I had not heard of firejail. But given the latest news of "wanna-cry" and other malware, I found the firejail to be just the needed program to sandbox the Windows programs running under WINE. And I find the sandboxing of Firefox to be appealiing as well. A standard installation of ...

It was a clean install from a Linux Mint 18.1 Cinnamon DVD. And it has not manifest itself yet (again).I wish I could reproduce it so that a proper problem report could be filed. I was curious if anyone else experienced the problem. When I started the project, I did the usual home directory data bac...

Windows are invisible

Yesterday, I switched from the MATE desktop to the Cinnamon desktop while upgrading from Mint 17.3 to Mint 18.1. For the most part, I've been pleasantly surprised by the smoothness of Cinnamon. However, somehow the windows became invisible. I would start a program like the file manager and while the...

Using Virtualbox on Linux Mint to load a custom ROM onto an Android Tablet

I purchased a Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 Android tablet and became disgusted with the bloatware from Samsung. So, I embarked on a mission to replace the existing Samsung version of Android with a leaner version. After many searches on the DuckDuckGo search engine, I came up with 2 possibilities - either ...
