Re: Boot menu does not show linux mint

EasyUEFI is a Windows tool that can be used to fix these kind of problems (assuming you are booting in UEFI mode).

Re: alternative booting

Some CDs and USBs can only boot in Legacy mode. Can you set BIOS to "Both UEFI and Legacy" mode?

Re: Stuck in Linux

@crgibson Pls inform what happens when you try to start Windows from BIOS! Can you see the Windows Boot Manager option? If yes, any error messages when you select it?

Re: Stuck in Linux

It is a bit disappointing that none of the three wise men have come back with some suggestion for action in well over 24 hours. My Shaman said the following: "Unlike on a MBR disk, a Linux installation cannot overwrite Window bootloaders on a GPT disk, so they have probably been deleted, e.g. b...

Re: UEFI Problem [SOLVED]

Moving the boot flag did not work on my GPT disk. It does work on MBR disks. I frequently boot in Legacy mode to a Linux distro on th MBR disk. and in its grub menu I can change my mind and boot another distro on the GPT disk. But it has to have a partition bootloader.

Re: UEFI Problem

Yes. I do realise that it is a GPT disk. To boot Linux on a GPT disk in Legacy mode it requires partition MBR. That is the answer to the original question.

Re: Stuck in Linux

What I understand from crgibson is that there is no Windows bootloader anymore. If so, it most likely got overwritten when installing LM. This could not happen with a UEFI install of either or both. And he is not likely to have changed between UEFI and Legacy. So most likely he is using a MBR disk a...

Re: Stuck in Linux

My guess is that crgibson has a MBR disk with Windows on sda1 and the Windows bootloader on sda. Then installed LM to sda2 and the LM bootloader to sda (instead of sda2), thus overwriting the Windows bootloader. To solve this I suggest executing "sudo grub-install --force /dev/sda2" and al...

Re: UEFI Problem

How about running this in a terminal:

sudo grub-install --target=i386 -pc --force /dev/sdbX

Replace X with the LM partition, and change the boot flag from the EFI partition to the LM partition. Can you now do Legacy boot?

Re: Dual boot with Win10

Have used Ext2Fsd version 0.69 for over 2 years without the slightest problem, as I do keep my my Linux partitions clean. I find that I nowadays prefer Windows File Manager for heavy work, especially since Konqueror was killed.

Re: Dual boot with Win10

Ext2Fsd is an excellent plugin for Windows to enable read/write of extx partitions. The real problem has been "dirty" ext partitions, which cause havoc with the Windows File Manager, when Ext2Fsd attempts to mount the dirty partition. Keep it clean with "sudo e2fsck -fv /dev/sdxy"...

Re: Multi-Boot Advice

I suggest you install the Mint bootloader to its own partition (sda4) and keep the Windows bootloader on sda (sda1), i.e. keep using the Windows bootmenu and add Mint manually, e.g. with EasyBCD
