Re: Mint 13 & exFat

If all the files are smaller than 4GiB there's nothing to go wrong re-formatting the SDXC card to FAT32. All my SanDisk USB stores come like that anyway. exFAT is something inflicted by the SD card specification, not a technical requirement imposed by the hardware. Thank you: this helped. :) I popp...

[Solved] Mint 13 & exFat

I have a very old machine (12+ years old) running Mint 13 on it. I basically installed M13, and forgot about it, once everything was up and running. Meaning, that what little Linux knowledge I had has long since abandoned my feeble brain. I'm getting ready to toss this machine in the trash, but firs...

Video Recording / Editing Software

Hi! I was wondering if someone could recommend a good video recording app (via a webcam) and one to edit the video before being uploaded to YouTube. I'm running the 32-bit Mint-13 KDE version of the OS. I'm still relatively new to Linux, so if there's something already preinstalled that I missed, I ...

Re: How do you remove a hung package?

I found the answer on another site:

Code: Select all

sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/info/ttf-mscorefonts-installer.prerm

sudo dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq ttf-mscorefonts-installer
Marking solved.

Re: How do you remove a hung package?

I got to the bottom, and there was text for <Ok>, but it was definitely NOT a button. I read somewhere that it takes awhile to load. Well, after 30 minutes of nothing changing, I gave up on it. And, no, I no longer need it. I manually installed the fonts. I just need to remove it from the Synaptic l...

[SOLVED] How do you remove a hung package?

I just tried (several times) to install ttf-mscorefonts-installer , and each time I did, it got hung on the EULA screen. I eventually just transffered the fonts from another PC. However, now, when I go into the Synaptic Package Manager, it shows it as being installed. And it won't let me remove it. ...

Re: [SOLVED] Dell Inspiron 8600 Wireless not working

I feel as though I should add one more note here that might help people in the future... Before I went to bed this morning (I work 3rd shift), I shutdown the PC. When I turned it back on this afternoon, it couldn't maintain a stable wireless connection. Upon looking at the network configuration, I r...

Re: Finally saying GOOD-BYE to Windows!!

Thank you both for the welcome! The missus and I looked at both Cinnamon and Mate. After reading about the desktops, she thought she'd prefer Cinnamon, and Mate was suggested if one wasn't sure which one to get. So we played around with them for a few days, and decided to settle on KDE. So far, we'v...

Re: Finally saying GOOD-BYE to Windows!!

I'm loving it! Right now, on this old 1GB machine, I'm running 4 desktops, and there's little to no lag...on a USB hard drive. Reminds me of my old BBS days when I ran a 4-node Wildcat! BBS on a 486SX with OS/2 Warp!! LOL From now on, Windows is banned from this house, and Mint will be the preferred...

Re: Finally saying GOOD-BYE to Windows!!

Thanks for the links! Luckily, I didn't need them. Some more searching uncovered the solution for me: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 73&start=0

Re: [SOLVED] Dell Inspiron 8600 Wireless not working

OK, so the above process did not work for me. So, I searched farther, and found that this is apparently a bug in Ubuntu. To fix it, you need to issue this command: sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer However, this resulted in an error ending in this: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an err...

Finally saying GOOD-BYE to Windows!!

Greetings and Felicitations! My name is Rich, and I'm an alco...um, Window...I mean, a former Windows User! :D Recently, the hard drive in my Dell Inspiron 8600 crashed. Because of that, I (and my wife Mary) have taken the opportunity to "reevaluate" our Operating System options. The only Unix expos...

[Solved] How do I add an application to the KDE menu?

I installed Skype via the Software Manager, but there's no icon for it in the KDE application menu (I figured it would be under "Internet" or "Multimedia"). To run it, I have to do a search for it first. Can someone tell me how to add it to the menu?

Thanks!

Re: Different Skype version (n00b question)

Yeah, I think I may be better off that way. I found this to install v4.0: http://www.upubuntu.com/2012/06/how-to-install-skype-40-via-ppa-under.html but all that did was reinstall the old version. I'm assuming I did something wrong, so I guess I'll leave it as is. I was mainly looking at the newer v...
