Re: Anyone else finding 17.1 buggier than 17?

Yeah I think live booting them to test them is a good idea. I'll use 17 as my main Linux OS for quite some time I think, and just dabble in others for the enjoyment of it and the experience of trying different OSs. I do hope that Mint 17.2 or 18 or something runs better on my PC than 17.1 did - I'd ...

Re: Anyone else finding 17.1 buggier than 17?

17.1 comes with a newer kernel and newer drivers for hardware. Might be something is a problem there. If you have Nvidia or AMD graphics card, worth a look in Driver Manager. That said, second life in the past has been very poorly supported on Linux. I wouldn't take that as an instrument to measure...

Re: About the level 4 and 5 security updates

In an ideal world there would not even exist the need for leveling updates. One could update whatever exists, via GUI or command-line (apt-get), and there would not even exist this discussion at all. In the real world some updates can break things; this does not happen for the majority of systems a...

Anyone else finding 17.1 buggier than 17?

Because things keep going wrong lol The window manager crashed, the Mint menu search wouldn't come up with text, the menus glitch a bit sometimes, it won't remember my user, Second Life TOTALLY bugs out on even the login screen, and I think one or two other things. It looks gorgeous and I love where...

About the level 4 and 5 security updates

Personally, I think that leaving them there unselected with red blotches next to them (the colour of the level badge and exclamation mark that indicates they are security updates) is very silly. Don't get me wrong, I ADORE Mint!! Easily the best distro, totally awesome, and very friendly for new use...

Re: Public PCs having to drop XP... migrate to Mint?

fraxinus_63 - Yeah I suppose that's true. However it only takes one or two of them to show an interest in it for things to take steps towards changing. Ubuntu and Mint are both increasingly in the public eye as well as programs connected to open source or wholly open source such as Firefox, Chrome, ...

Sugar, is the strangest distro I've ever seen. Hanna Montana Linux must be from some overachieving parent... I hope. Sugar is cool! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyjzpUmVEV0 However I do think that abstracting it so much from a normal desktop may actually hinder a child, because they might find it...

Re: Public PCs having to drop XP... migrate to Mint?

They would need a full desktop environment and solution, Why, what apart from a browser are they running at the moment. erm, I really don't know. I would imagine Office, and I was using a DVD burning application. Also reasonably sophisticated admin features would be needed I would think. I do see y...

I think they're actually atheists or something though Nope. I think they're the real deal... But, does Satanic really win over Hannah Montana? :D http://hannahmontana.sourceforge.net/ lol, makes you wonder why these things aren't just released as themes! Good choice, though! The strangest Linux distribution(s) you've ever seen

For me, so far, Ubuntu Satanic Edition.

Re: Public PCs having to drop XP... migrate to Mint?

Or maybe chromium OS  I really don't like ChromeOS... it's just too simple and bland. Sends me to sleep! I am barely aware of Firefox OS. I think they're all far too simple though. They would need a full desktop environment and solution, like Mint, Ubuntu or openSUSE. Perhaps there are multi...

Re: Public PCs having to drop XP... migrate to Mint?

Great posts, I agree with all of that I think! I don't think your average user will notice much of a difference. LibreOffice will pop up instead of MS Office, and the taskbar will look different, and some desktop effects they're not used to, etc. For the most part though, it does have the vague form...

Re: Public PCs having to drop XP... migrate to Mint?

Yeah I would prefer real computers to tablets anyway. Tablets are surely underpowered, easier to steal, have a simpler UI and often no true keyboard?

I dunno, also it would be way cheaper to just keep the old machines and bung Linux on them, and definitely cheaper in the long run I would think.

Public PCs having to drop XP... migrate to Mint?

I've been thinking. In most public places like libraries here in the UK, most of the machines seem to still run XP, as well as businesses and whatever. XP of course will not be supported from April, other than XP Embedded which of course they don't run. Surely Mint 17 when it is released would be a ...

Re: I think Mint 17 will be a v big release for open source

I'm very much enjoying Petra but I'm always interested in a new LTS release. I'm more of a MATE/Xfce guy myself as opposed to Cinnamon but it's all good. As long as nobody tries to make me use GNOME3, Unity, or KDE. XFCE is great. I used it after I borked Cinnamon by trying to update to 2.0 after a...
