Dual boot Windows Server Essentials and Linux Mint

hello, to make it simple, I absolutely need to replace Linux Mint with Windows Server Essentials 2016. I'm really sad, but my business is my priority, beyond my pleasure and my side projects. This thread explains why , I can't get any kind of Linux paid support where I live, everyone I've talked to ...

Re: I'm gonna need a little help with Virtualization...

"That's heavy duty. You can try it on a virtual machine but the cost will be time. Based on your questions I think you're asking in the wrong place. You don't need linux mint forum users' opinions, you need a consultant." I was afraid of that :( That software seems a little too big for my needs. Sho...

I'm gonna need a little help with Virtualization...

Sorry for being so vague in the title. Ah, basically, I'm a little overwhelmed. I've never really worked with virtual machines before. I've installed one in Windows, couldn't get it working properly, abandonned the project. So, I've bought a new bidding software for my company. The salesman assured ...

Searching for an easy to use Web server with PHP

I found a nice CRM for my company. Well, it looks nice in the pictures. However, it requires me to install a web server with PHP to run it. https://suitecrm.com/wiki/index.php/Installation I don't want my own web server running here (not yet, at least, it's a distant possibility though), and we're o...

Re: New to mint networking

Your router should provide the internet connection, then send it to your wifi, that is the easiest way. If you want wifi to receive internet from somewhere (say, your cellphone) than send it through your ethernet card and then your wired router, then I found this guide here for Ubuntu, it should be ...

Re: Samba share permission problem

Well, duh, I have to go to every single sub-directory I want an application to write to and give me ownership there. Otherwise, I can copy file, I can create a file from Windows explorer, but I can't print a file to PDF there, I can't have an accounting software create a DBF or CDX there, unless I c...

Re: Wireless disconnecting Asus laptop rtl8821ae driver

I think I've broke it! Lost wifi completely now so am back on Windoze ... WICD said it was connected, but the wifi icon in the bottom right said disconnected and wifi is "not available". I think maybe the two network managers are conflicting. If you upgraded the kernel, if you have to reinstall you...

Re: Wireless disconnecting Asus laptop rtl8821ae driver

@samriggs there is no tlp file in the /etc/default directory. @ciarly running uname - r shows me 4.4.0-75-generic. How do I update it to 4.6.4, the update manager shows all up to date. did you install the app? It's not installed by default: http://linrunner.de/en/tlp/docs/tlp-linux-advanced-power-m...

Re: possible future spyware on the new Ryzen cpu,s?.

Is it out of the realm of possibilities to have an open source bios? One that a user could flash brandX bios and replace completely the manufacturers bios? No, it is not out of the realm of possibilities. In fact, you have a choice of several: https://libreboot.org/ https://www.coreboot.org/ https:...

Re: possible future spyware on the new Ryzen cpu,s?.

But on to my question, I now find that I need a more powerfull machine and was waiting to see what the new AMD chipsets would be like, but have just read an article that made me wonder about the new chipsets, in that they are following Intel in using (PSP- platform security processor) like intels r...

Re: Wireless disconnecting Asus laptop rtl8821ae driver

See this is quite a common issue (only happens in Linux, not Windows 10). Have tried the following: cd /etc cd modprobe.d mk file rtl8821ae.conf sudo vi rtl8821ae.conf add options rtl8821ae debug=0 disable_watchdog=N fwlps=N swlps=Y swenc=Y ips=N msi=0 Also tried this: https://medium.com/@elmaxx/rt...

that's not the same software This is mine: http://www.avantage.ca/en/partner/developers/ Originally, they used Clipper to develop their software under DOS. Don't know what they're using now, the company has seen many changes over the year, but it's still that old MS-DOS 8.3 filenames with DBF and CD...

Re: Samba share permission problem

that didn't entirely work. It seems ok for Excel & such. Though I'll need to wait until everyone is working to truly see if the problem is solved. However, for my accounting software, I got regular errors, and tech support tells me it's because the software doesn't have write access to the drive it ...

Re: Mint saved the day

I had a thumb drive with Mint Live on it. We booted. Connected to our LAN, and I copied a couple thousand .jpg's, word documents, etc... to our network. Yeah, most Linux distros are great for that. It saved my skin a couple of times :) I always keep an up to date Linux Mint somewhere on some USB an...

Re: abandoning LM KDE -- moved to Cinnamon

Here's why: 1. Chrome is nice, but I need an engine. Too many things that should have worked by default either did not or were easily broken and couldn't be fixed. Asking for help here, I got none. Conclusion: KDE now is the same as it was when I abandoned it 2 years ago (in the form of Kubuntu). I...

Re: Samba share permission problem

Well, I kinda spoke to soon. It seems my permissions/ownerships aren't totally right. I've posted the info below. So summarize the directory structure of one problematic share, for my accounting software: - Avantage -AVA01 -file2.dbf -file2.cdx -AVA02 -file1.dbf -file1.cdx Although I own "Avantage",...
