Re: A dual boot with Windows 11? Will it work?

I am yet to be convinced it's that simple. Once enabled, I am unsure that TPM can easily be disabled. I am pretty sure it cannot be reversed. It can be easily disabled. But, you could create a Mint bootable USB, unplug your main hard drive, enable tpm, boot on that Linux stick. If it's working for ...

Re: Is Linux better then Windows at all ?

And at home, I'm on wifi and the best adapters (in my case), never had good Linux drivers. No wifi issues on my laptop. I paid attention not to get some Broadcom nonsense, but Intel. Actually via just buying a laptop with Linux pre-installed where the vendor had reasonably decided to go with Intel ...

You distro of choice for a small home file server?

Hi all, mostly a lurker here :) I've used Linux Mint in the past, Cinnamon DE. Loved it. Unfortunately, at some point in time, my work required me to ditch Linux and install Windows Server what was then only a file server. Some stupid software absolutely required this to work on the other machines. ...

Re: Is Linux better then Windows at all ?

I came across this on the forum. The author really seems to know his stuff. He has written a detailed and well researched article . By reading it , I feel that Linux isn't so great after all and may be Windows is better. https://itvision.altervista.org/why.linux.is.not.ready.for.the.desktop.current...

Re: Stable vs Rolling, another look

While it's not, to be fair, the only major selling point, it is a significant one that a normal user can run a mainstream Linux distro and trust it will be very solid, stable, not crash, multitask well, etc. OTOH, if Windows was so unstable as to be unusable, they would have lost all their customer...

Up to Windows 10, that part can be easily fixed, as in, you can disable automatic driver updates. Don't know how Win11 is gonna manage this though.

Re: Stable vs Rolling, another look

If an OS isn't stable (in the "does it crash or not crash" sense of that word) then it will never gain traction with the general public. OTOH, without good hardware support, it also won't gain traction. And that's just the most basic level of whether a platform gets adopted. Windows 3.1 w...

Dual boot Windows Server Essentials and Linux Mint

hello, to make it simple, I absolutely need to replace Linux Mint with Windows Server Essentials 2016. I'm really sad, but my business is my priority, beyond my pleasure and my side projects. This thread explains why , I can't get any kind of Linux paid support where I live, everyone I've talked to ...

"That's heavy duty. You can try it on a virtual machine but the cost will be time. Based on your questions I think you're asking in the wrong place. You don't need linux mint forum users' opinions, you need a consultant." I was afraid of that :( That software seems a little too big for my ...

I'm gonna need a little help with Virtualization...

Sorry for being so vague in the title. Ah, basically, I'm a little overwhelmed. I've never really worked with virtual machines before. I've installed one in Windows, couldn't get it working properly, abandonned the project. So, I've bought a new bidding software for my company. The salesman assured ...

Searching for an easy to use Web server with PHP

I found a nice CRM for my company. Well, it looks nice in the pictures. However, it requires me to install a web server with PHP to run it. https://suitecrm.com/wiki/index.php/Installation I don't want my own web server running here (not yet, at least, it's a distant possibility though), and we're o...

Re: New to mint networking

Your router should provide the internet connection, then send it to your wifi, that is the easiest way. If you want wifi to receive internet from somewhere (say, your cellphone) than send it through your ethernet card and then your wired router, then I found this guide here for Ubuntu, it should be ...

Re: Samba share permission problem

Well, duh, I have to go to every single sub-directory I want an application to write to and give me ownership there. Otherwise, I can copy file, I can create a file from Windows explorer, but I can't print a file to PDF there, I can't have an accounting software create a DBF or CDX there, unless I c...

Re: Wireless disconnecting Asus laptop rtl8821ae driver

I think I've broke it! Lost wifi completely now so am back on Windows ... WICD said it was connected, but the wifi icon in the bottom right said disconnected and wifi is "not available". I think maybe the two network managers are conflicting. If you upgraded the kernel, if you have to rei...

@samriggs there is no tlp file in the /etc/default directory. @ciarly running uname - r shows me 4.4.0-75-generic. How do I update it to 4.6.4, the update manager shows all up to date. did you install the app? It's not installed by default: http://linrunner.de/en/tlp/docs/tlp-linux-advanced-power-m...

Is it out of the realm of possibilities to have an open source bios? One that a user could flash brandX bios and replace completely the manufacturers bios? No, it is not out of the realm of possibilities. In fact, you have a choice of several: https://libreboot.org/ https://www.coreboot.org/ https:...

Re: possible future spyware on the new Ryzen cpu,s?.

But on to my question, I now find that I need a more powerfull machine and was waiting to see what the new AMD chipsets would be like, but have just read an article that made me wonder about the new chipsets, in that they are following Intel in using (PSP- platform security processor) like intels r...
