Re: LMDE to become main Mint edition?

I think with this step Mint devs to not have to burden to maintain everything alone which is clever so that they are able to concentrate their main power at Cinnamon due to other desktops are already in Debian's repo and will need only a little of polishing. With Debian Jessie they get already a lot...

Re: <DECIDED> LMDE to be based on Stable, not on Testing.

That's good news due that I'm always tracked stable since I installed LMDE and therefore a great step to a stable platform.

Re: Which do you prefer: Cinnamon or XFCE?

XFCE - it's stable and gives me all what I want/need (one FreeBSD install for testing/learning purpose). Tried Cinnamon/Gnome3 and went back to XFCE due to the memory consumption - however Cinnamon seems to be the DE what Gnome3 should be and after one year of trying Gnome3 I do not work anymore wit...

Re: Edimax AC 1200 Wlan Stick

Hi The good news that out of curiosity I compiled the driver on my Debian 7.5 box and it compiles. However I do not have the hardware so you have test it ;-). To compile the modules you need the matching kernel source and build tools and below you will find a small guide: to install the matching ker...

Re: Chinese has taken over my desktop

Hi

You have to change

Code: Select all

/etc/default/locale
and

Code: Select all

~/.pam_environment
.

In

Code: Select all

/etc/default/locale
you replace all chinese lines with:

LANG="en_US"
LANGUAGE="en_US:en"

and in

Code: Select all

~/.pam_environment
you replace all chinese lines with:

LANG=en_US
LANGUAGE=en_US

Re: How to install the latest Realtek audio driver

That means that the kernel source package of your current running kernel is missing and normally it should be enough to install all bits to compile a 3rd party module:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-generic

Re: Python running command (DOS apps?)

Depends what you would like to do but in case you want to share a python app with Windows users you can use: http://www.py2exe.org/ or in case you want to share it with other Linux users but you do not know whether they have all libs, python versions,... you can generate a frozen python binary: http...

Re: Recommend desktop environment for older machine

I would go with
1.) MATE
2.) Cinnamon
3.) XFCE

all three are light and do their job. However for former Gnome 2 users I would recommend MATE.

In what way Google is no friend of Linux? I think you miss the point here of Google Android is basically Linux... Can you support your quote??? Android uses a (modified) Linux kernel but is entirely its own animal, quite separate from what most people call Linux distributions (or Gnu/Linux, if they...

Re: How to prevent home directory from expanding

For a quick check you can use following command:

du -h | sort -n

du -h (disk usage in human format) arranges the output items according to size in case someone is interested in details what above command outputs.

You can use the pepper plugin in chromium too and therefore I do not have to install Google chrome - a howto from Arch but it works on Mint too: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ch ... gin_API.29

Re: Bye Bye Windows!

There are other advantages over Windows: I can have hardware longer in use as I do not depend anymore on driver politcs of a certain hardware vendor as long I use open source drivers and that's in my case one of the biggest advantages. How often happend it to somebody that the used hardware do not w...

CFQ is a good default scheduler and is the best for average users - noop, deadline get used in large database systems and often you use noop as databases have their own scheduler. Concerning Code: Select all nano /proc/sys/vm/swappiness (Set this to 100) is not a good idea as it means the system sho...

Newer flashplugins make use of different hardware accelerations (GPU, CPU) and as P3 is quite old - running a newer release could be a problem in case you do not have good graphic card in it - P3 with an NVidia should work. However in case you use want to use the NVidia driver from NVidia you have t...
