Re: Virtualbox 5.2.22 Guest Additions + Cinnamon + Software Rendering

Version 6.0 is out. I have been using it for a week now. Can't get win 10 running in it properly the screen does weird thing, rendering locks up, vb freezes, and can't get access to win 10 at all. Although I have a suspicion it could be because i only have 4gb ram. I have installed 6.0 too and have...

Re: Several outdated development packages in repository

While I am anti-microsoft to a degree I am not a purist. I did want to explore non-microsoft options. I appreciate the link to VS Code as I didn't consider looking at microsoft's offerings.

Re: Several outdated development packages in repository

Thanks gents that was very enlightening. This was not exactly what I was expecting but is the reality. I decided to explore Synaptic Package Manager and it shows the change log. From the change log Andreas Moog says: codeblocks (16.01+dfsg-2.1) unstable; urgency=medium * Non-maintainer upload. * App...

Re: Several outdated development packages in repository

Thanks. Bleeding edge wasn't a requirement. I wanted to avoid issues stemming from older packages malfunctioning in a newer OS/distro. Its possible and likely that Mint 19.x has evolved beyond some of the packages in the repos. The packages I listed were just examples and only the few that I looked ...

Thank you Smurphos! I popped in 5.2.20 to replace 5.2.22 and it worked.

Several outdated development packages in repository

How does one request that the out of date development tool packages get updated in the repository? I only checked CodeBlocks, Geany, Lazarus, KDevelop, GCC. One comment in the CodeBlocks section says that the version in the repo's. has serious issues with Mint v19. I'm a newb looking to get feet in ...

Re: Canonical Pursuing A Hardware/Software Survey For Ubuntu Installations

Thanks for posting the update Lucap. The article says nothing about the Popcon and Apport services, and whether or not those services will be enabled by default. Also, the article is so blatantly bias, but the bias is expected given the site.

Re: Canonical Pursuing A Hardware/Software Survey For Ubuntu Installations

isn't Canonical getting cozy with that commercial bunch up in Redmond? I think that sez it all. Of course they are... Canonical is just one of their Linux/Windows integration partners: http://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-and-canonical-partner-to-bring-ubuntu-to-windows-10/ You might consider ski...

Re: Canonical Pursuing A Hardware/Software Survey For Ubuntu Installations

@eengnerd: Will Cooke's own words: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2018-February/040139.html Read it carefully and you will see it is more than just hardware data collection. There is no need for this manner of data collection. If Canonical offered community members a means to willing...

Re: Canonical Pursuing A Hardware/Software Survey For Ubuntu Installations

If Mint wants to remove or disable this functionality and Canonical tells them they have to leave it as is or not use Unbuntu as the Mint base OS, then Canonical is selling the data or has plans to expand the collection in the future and sell it. If Canonical doesn't care one way or another, then i...

Re: Canonical Pursuing A Hardware/Software Survey For Ubuntu Installations

I won't debate as to when Popcon was added to Debian. However, a usage tracking service, set to run on an on-going schedule via a cron job (or other mechanism), that reports back to the Debian devs or anyone else, is spyware . It is in the same category as the data collection telemetry crap that is ...

Re: Do most Linux users DIY or have OEM systems?

Wow that frosted white motherboard looks awesome. However, the board is only 3/5 eggs on newegg.com. I tend to stick with 4/5 and 5/5 egg parts with a relatively high review count as well as checking independent reviews online. I'm also bias in favor of Asus boards. The 1TB SSD is a lot more $$$. As...

Re: Canonical Pursuing A Hardware/Software Survey For Ubuntu Installations

Sorry gents. I didn't realize we already had a thread on this topic before I created another. A link to the thread I created: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=264101 My questions are: - What is the LinuxMint team's viewpoint on this? - Will the team use the 18.04 LTS as the base for ...

Re: Do most Linux users DIY or have OEM systems?

I've always had OEM systems, but one day I want to build my own computer. Depending on your needs and your wallet one day can be sooner than you think. Just to kick around some ideas: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/z9hfr6 It has a Ryzen APU (CPU with AMD RX Vega 11 graphics hardware). I have not tes...

Re: Sell me on Linux please!

@Linkdead_: Welcome to the Linux Mint community. There really isn't much selling to do. Personally, I don't like apple. I was long time Microsoftie for work reasons and dual-boot dabbled for quite a bit with Linux. However, after one witnesses: - the crippling of Windows XP via a single update (wow ...

Re: Do most Linux users DIY or have OEM systems?

+1 DIY. I've been building PC's since the 80386 SX16 was released. The only PC I've bought was a Dell Laptop for myself and a inexpensive dell desktop for a younger relative. The desktop was so that I didn't have to play tech support if it got broken/destroyed.

FYI, Ryzen APUs are on the market.

Re: Ubuntu 18.04 data collection announcement

Just imagine the blow back one will encounter in discussions about Linux. As soon as we cite the privacy issues of Win 10, any clown within a google search will counter that point with Will Cooke's mail-list post, and the OMG Ubuntu article where they clearly are trying to make it seem like its no b...
