Re: Premissions and sound

Problem 1. I can read but cannot write to my secondary hard drive, installed on the computer, and also not to an external hard drive. I can read and write to usb sticks, but that's not enough for proper back ups. I am told 'the destination is read only' and find when I change permissions the window...

Firefox 57 is great. No problems, youtube plays fine, pages load much faster, less memory use than previous FFs.

You could put it in one file, like ~/bin/apache : (check to make sure "apache" is not already used ("which apache") ...and/or use "Apache", etc, instead) #!/bin/bash # if [ $# -lt 1 ] then echo Usage: `basename $0` pattern exit 1 fi sudo /etc/local/apache2/bin/apachectl...

Re: cleanup of temporary files - a newbie questuon

I am using BleachBit to clean up the browser cache and the system's temporary files, which can total up to 400MB at a time. Free advice: stay away from the BlechBit "wipe" feature. What happens to the system if these files are never cleaned up by the user? Is there an automatic that remov...

Re: mintUpdate: no process found (upgrade from 18.2 to 18.3)

Regarding "no process found": This obvious: mintupdate <> mintUpdate. There must be no capital U inside. When I run "mintupdate" it responds with "mintUpdate". Regarding the missing upgrade menu entry: Do you see an update for mint-upgrade-info from V 1.0.9 -> 1.1.0 in...

[SOLVED GAVE UP] mintUpdate: no process found (upgrade from 18.2 to 18.3)

Edit: I've decided the "mintupdate" software is too buggy and kludgey to use, so shall not try to use it; it's just one weird thing after another, and useful information is completely absent. Now mintupdate is prompting for a password to run synaptic, but bash gets the password. +++ I was ...

Sorry....did not knew that.... No need to apologize for that! Can you please help me finding a way out of this quagmire? Is the issue that you can't "see" the two 300GB partitions? Here's one of them: /dev/sda3 ntfs (not mounted) A0D25ACDD25AA776 Have you tried looking in "Places&quo...

Re: Running as Root is not a Sin

mintinstall The software manager should not be run as root. Please run it in user mode. That's weird. I can run it as root (sudo -i) , no problem. I looked at the .py files and apparently your error msg was commented out (not by me!) though it did have "The software manager should be run as ro...

I tried that and it seemed to work...but then it turned out that it didn't remember anything (block was gone). Like I said, ublock is buggy.

Re: Coming soon - Firefox Client Side Decoration

I don't get it - is it a big deal to remove the titlebar (I do that with fluxbox) or move a menu bar somewhere else (can probably do that with userChrome.css) ? If they want users to be able to customize a program's GUI they should emulate foobar - or just copy it because the guy designed and implem...

Re: Mint is not showing all the partitions of HDD

I created 3 separate partitions for mint. "/", /root, /home. Careful with the POOR terminology - and poor, or at least questionable, disk layout - that Linux inherited from Unix: "/" is the "root" partition. "/root" is the $HOME of user "root", whic...

You have to add the memory used by the "Web Content" processes. 700 MB sounds like only for the main Firefox process. I'm using "free -m" Edit: Before FF: $ free -m total used free shared buff/cache available Mem: 3951 144 2789 6 1017 3555 Swap: 1999 0 1999 Open FF with 10 tabs ...

At the end, the tutorial makes a sweeping claim that I'm not sure I agree with (e.g. do we still need an add-on to block/dump LSOs?): "Don’t forget that once you’re used to umatrix, you don’t need any other blocking extensions anymore! You can get rid of ublock origin, privacy badger, noscript...

FF 59.0a1 looks a lot like FF 57.

Why is that funny? It's an extremely easy way to use a non-standard program.
