Re: PlayOnLinux apps lost Internet access?

It seems dumb to have both versions of Wine installed, but apparently I do and I had the same setup before, when my Office apps worked... I think POL does that - I've never used POL and don't know much about it. One thing that keeps me from wanting to just download and install all the latest is tha...

And then below that there will be a button that's marked 'Forward' or 'Yes'. :? I was just messing with my stuff at "archive.org", which has one of the worst interfaces in the history of the universe. On the page for your "item" (a poor term, since it's almost meaningless, but an item is a page of ...

Re: Trying to boot from USB, but boots from hard drive

I used Clonezilla (I think) to copy the Linux partitions over to the USB stick. It works great, but there is an issue I cannot figure out. Subsequently I get the Grub2 screen and select Mint. But, even though I thought I was booting from the USB stick, what seems to boot up after I select Mint in t...

Re: PlayOnLinux apps lost Internet access?

I figured out how to run iexplorer, and it comes up and works fine. I ran iexplorer from the command line. I tried running Outlook and Word the same way and they got the same errors they have been getting. You already did the other stuff I'd suggest: "deleted the .wine and .PlayOnLinux folders from...

Re: PlayOnLinux apps lost Internet access?

I cannot figure out what is going on or what happened to break my install and is now keeping it broken. Is it possibly the latest kernel? Have you tried the previous (working?) kernel? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! A more common problem is *preventnig* wine programs from accessing the inte...

Re: Good, bad, and direction of Linux Desktop UI

Take a quick and easy screenshot before doing something dramatic to be able to recall what is was before. There's always a way to deal with poor GUIs. Enter about:support in your address bar and you can find the list of extensions there for copying. Thanks! And - sigh - I notice that they interchan...

Re: /boot size and full disk encryption

...I do think there ought to be some sort of script that would warn users that they are running low on disk space in /boot (with the option to abort and remove older kernels not active to open up space), instead of just trying the install and failing. Check this forum for a kernel-cleaning script (...

Re: /boot size and full disk encryption

1) Is there a limitation on /boot size using FDE? Can /boot be enlarged on the fly? Maybe you could use links to the big files which you move somewhere else. 2) If /boot size is fixed, I'm pretty sure you can "expand right" of a boot partition (don't move the beginning [left end] of it; move the "r...

Re: Good, bad, and direction of Linux Desktop UI

The main point of many modern GUIs seems to be "make it look clean" rather than "make it easy to use". Another pain is error messages where you can't copy the text. Had this the other day on some linux program... And linux has developed a bad habit a having "fake names" for programs; e.g. file-rolle...

Re: Dual Boot Two Linux Versions

Can I just choose to 'install the beta version alongside 18.3 sylvia' option during the beta installation process I dunno if "install alongside" will work - your partition info looks messed up (bad presentation, not bad partitions). FWIW, I always prefer to do "something else", then I know what it'...

Re: Very High CPU Usage

as you can see xdg-mime is the culprit .. i don't even know what it does -_- It's pretty complicated. I typed xdg-mime into a search engine, and it told me that it's another fine product of freedesktop.org: xdg-mime — command line tool for querying information about file type handling and adding de...

Re: 18.3 XFCE is so rock solid

I agree! My only problems have been the result of messing around...well, pretty much. They (kernel/drivers/virtualbox issues) definitely didn't have anything to do Xfce. newer version to supersede it. Ok it may boot 2.3 milliseconds faster or may be able I did an unapproved "upgrade" by changing the...

Re: Wine <--> CrossOver ...?

As a matter of fact I do run VirtualBox and W7. I use it to run 3D-CAD software(only supported by Windows) I ran virtualbox until photoshop started working properly in wine; one trick is to save the vbox state (="virtual machine"?) with your program(s) still running, then restart it w/that state pa...

Re: Boot Time Now 30 seconds

$ systemd-analyze I see that but how long does it actually take from the power button push till you see the desktop? A few seconds longer - I could cut that by disconnecting some of its many card-reading thingies that I never use. What is the text for me to see my boot time. That's the command, abo...
