Re: cant remove linux-image-extra-4.13.0-45-generic

ran the commands one by one and re-booted twice, didn't seem to help. It looks like the apt system thinks it's installed but the files are missing. You might try reinstalling it (thru synaptic, search for '4.13.0-45' on the slow search, rt-click->reinstall), then purging it. Unfortunately a 'kernel...

Re: Searching for files in existing PC from Live USB boot

I've booted into a Windows 7 laptop. I need to rescue documents before installing Linux Mint. I open the file program. There is a search icon. When I search, nothing is found. I can navigate to the files individually - they're definitely there. Are you running windows 7 or the Mint LiveDVD/USB (ins...

Re: Mint 19 Cinnamon doesn't shutdown

I installed Mint 19 before 2 days and everything was fine. Unfortunately today when I tried to shutdown, the laptop freezes with no icons or mouse on desktop. To turn it off I had to hold the power button. Don't use the power button! Use the REISUB method: Hold Alt & SysRq (Print Screen) and slowly...

Re: /boot partition has no space.

When I installed Linux Mint 17.2, it configured /boot with only 100 Mb of space. That's not big enough for more than one kernel. Since each new kernel update keeps previous ones, I'm pretty sure that's wrong. there is no space for anything new since 4.4.0-127.. How do I go about removing stale kern...

Re: Need a separate partition during install

I am trying to install linux mint encrypted. I would also like to have another partition for work files encrypted with veracrypt and not lux. The problem is that installation wipes the whole disk including any partitions I previously made. Because I'm encrypting my installation this automatically e...

Re: Can't quite get rid of some fonts....

So I tried these two things: --> fc-cache -r and --> fc-cache -fv and neither worked to remove those entries. Although it's better to use the software installer system to remove fonts, you can just remove the font files from /usr/share/fonts then do sudo fc-cache -fv and they won't show up anywhere...

Re: Mint 19 Opinions and Reviews

I upgraded 18.3 to 19 twice. The first time I had the 'mesa' problem, which was more theoretical than anything; and I had two version of wine installed (stable and development) without explicitly doing anything about wine. The second upgrade, the only issue was that the 'wine' install process was ki...

Re: Just want my sound levels / settings left alone. How?

Just downloaded and installed apulse. Followed the instructions and started FF with "apulse firefox" Sound works fine. That was quick! How do I get Alsa to give me more volume? Can I calibrate it somehow? Perhaps - on my setup I can make "PCM" 12db louder than "normal": qasmixer.jpg I do have to sa...

Re: Just want my sound levels / settings left alone. How?

Guess I can always put it back, right? Will I have to download a replacement mixer on the taskbar? I assume pavucontrol won't work (or maybe will be uninstalled) without Pulse? Yes, you can put it back; about the only real hassle is perhaps setting the audio output on programs (not sure if "default...

Re: Error installing wine on mint 19 tara cinnamon

$ wine --version wine-3.0.2 $ wine YUMI-2.0.5.7 wine: could not exec wineserver I just completely uninstalled wine and installed wine-stable; the installation puts a bunch of links in /usr/bin (IIRC), which pointed to /opt/wine-stable/bin But! A previous install of wine-stable didn't make those lin...

Re: slow boot with tara...?

I’ve a relatively new laptop but Tara boots slower than Sylvia, why? Thanks for helping me I have exactly the same problem: Mint 18.3 booted in 5.4 seconds, and Mint 19 takes 5.7 seconds! I haven't figured out a solution, but your slow booting might be caused by some sort of setting. Have you check...

Re: Just want my sound levels / settings left alone. How?

How do I tell (Mint? PulseAudio?) to just leave my settings alone? You might be able to hook-up a keyboard shortcut to a "pacmd" command, which is in: pulseaudio-utils Command line tools for the PulseAudio sound server On the other hand, I told pulseaudio to leave my settings alone by removing puls...

"dd file" extension
usually works -

Try 'apt --fix-broken install' with no packages (or specify a solution). $ apt --fix-broken install apt Usage: apt command [options] apt help command [options] Wine-stable-amd64 and Winehq-stable as installed, but no menus appear for wine at all from the menu. Re: Total Disappearance of Terminal from Linux Mint 18.3

gm10, I meant all the suggestions would not open a terminal or make LM18.3 react in any manner, or do anything. In other words, I cannot see a terminal or console prompt '$'. I hope I'm making myself clear enough. Since I'm still a Linux greenhorn, I can put it differently only by saying that I'm t...

Re: Total Disappearance of Terminal from Linux Mint 18.3

Thanks very much for you kind help. Since I have no way to access the command line at all, is there a GUI way for me to execute your suggestion? Two ways - Ctrl+Alt+T should open a terminal. If not... Ctrl+Alt+F1 (1,2,3..) to get a "console" to type that...which would still work if you didn't have ...

What happened when you did "[sudo] apt install wine" ? Exactly the same as trusarang indicated but with the additional requirements of installing mono and gecko twice. Your answer is completely mysterious; for one, I don't see that trusarang ever entered that exact command in this thread. TJMcK typ...

Re: files and folders

EDIT: scratch that http://xdman.sourceforge.net/ seems to work much better even though installing is a bit awkward . download xdm-2018-x64.tar.xz extract it, open terminal in that folder and run sudo ./install.sh you can then integrate it into chrome That's another piece of convoluted crapware.
