Re: Xfce 18.3 high cpu usage

You can check cpu use with

Code: Select all

top
in a terminal, or

Code: Select all

xfce4-taskmanager
(the 2nd will also be in the menus somewhere).
Xfce was the right choice for your machine, probably, and it *should* work ok...

Re: How to solve a math-type problem...

There's two issues with this. The first is the mass of the vehicle. The greater the mass, the greater the inertia. Therefore, whatever your speed, the stopping distance is impacted by mass. Actually it's not, at least not much, because the stopping force (friction) increases with the mass at the sa...

Re: How to solve a math-type problem...

What I want to understand is how to come up with the formula to be able to calculate what two seconds' worth of distance is, in whatever measurement system you like (Imperial or Metric) at any given rate of speed. The two seconds thing is wrong. The MAIN THING to remember about traffic and stopping...

Re: Puppy Linux install

Install and use Puppy then you will understand. Unless you have used Puppy you won't understand. I've used it, it's a great really small system (I had it on a 128M SD card), but the installation instructions were terrible*, as is their documentation i general. *they're still terrible. In addition t...

Re: Puppy Linux install

You don't get Mint or Ubuntu ease of installation in a distro like Puppy. Or of configuration. That's one of the costs of having such a small footprint. IIRC (it's been a few years) the installation was actually pretty easy (copy some files, point a grub.cfg at them with the right syntax) but you w...

Re: Mint 18.3 Firefox won't start

I did the updates and went to Firefox to update that. It should update thru the regular update process like other software. Firefox wont start. "Firefox has enco7untered an error and had to close". Uninstalled Firefox and downloaded a new copy via Software Manager. Same result. Re-installed Mint. S...

Re: Linux mint 18.3 set me a password upon login, without me requesting it

Right now the most important part is to get my files back... What files? Where did they come from and where did you put them? Why not to warn a user about that it's unsafe during the installation? You mean like this? https://www.linuxmint.com/download.php -> "Read the Linux Mint User Guide" --> htt...

Re: Update failure has killed Linux Mint Cinnamon

Now when I try to boot into Linux Mint, it gives me a black screen with error. That's not really an error message, it's the dreaded "BusyBox" and its instructions. Check these - https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=241789 --> https://askubuntu.com/questions/137655/boot-drops-to-a-initramfs-...

Without lightdm" Startup finished in 3.487s (kernel) + 1.475s (userspace) = 4.963s $ free -m total used free shared buff/cache available Mem: 3941 96 3613 6 231 3612 Swap: 1999 0 1999 The difference from the first values is, I think, smaller than the boot-to-boot-difference with lightdm.

...oh, come on, don't tease us... :D I assume you autologin without any display manager? I have done so, but not now. It's not worth the hassle, mainly about being able to login to Xfce...but I almost never do that anyway, if I need something from the xfce4 menu I just run xfce4-panel from a termin...

Re: Flatpak version of Audacity - cannot select USB interface

I'm not familiar with flatpaks but are they sandboxed to the point where they cannot see/accept usb interface's as input, or be used as part of a Jack audio configuration? Dunno. I used one for ...um...avidemux! It added 800MB of stuff to the system! And that version of avidemux required pulseaudio...

but all the links to the ISO files on the linuxmint.com list of mirrors show up as .zip files
They're .iso files. If you're ending up with zip files it's something your or windows(?) is doing.

New world's record! boot: < 5 sec, < 100M memory.

My old computer just set two new world* records for booting: time and memory use. $ free -m total used free shared buff/cache available Mem: 3941 92 3620 6 228 3616 Swap: 1999 0 1999 $ $ systemd-analyze Startup finished in 3.473s (kernel) + 1.513s (userspace) = 4.986s *world = this room.

Wow, the search function here is pretty rudimentary, isn't it?
It is.
So try an internet search like this:

Code: Select all

site:forums.linuxmint.com "Windows" "Safe Mode" "grub"

Go to advanced search
