Re: Libre Office docs don't restore after crushing

And sudo chown -R $USER:$USER /home/$USER cured it. Please, write: what was wrong with my Geliebte Mint? Running some programs (usually those with a GUI) with "sudo" can make "root" own the config files; for most non-terminal commands, use "gksudo" instead ( oops! not in Mint 19 - use "pkexec" or w...

Re: uninstalling an unknown program

I install a program a week or so ago. I do not know the name of the program nor the date installed. How'd you install it? [linux "apt" "history"] --> "The apt history is in /var/log/apt/history.log as said in a comment above. That said, this will not list packages that were installed manually, usin...

Re: Install old Nvidia driver 304

I only have 4.5.x kernels listed as options to install. Can I add 4.4x versions to 19? My free advice is: - How does your system run on the nouveau (generic) driver? I ran with the generic nouveau driver for a while and everything worked OK, including movies (w/xfce or fluxbox). If you're using Cin...

Re: Install old Nvidia driver 304

New to Linux, have Mint 19 installed. I have an old graphics card and want to install Nvidia driver 304 which is the last driver that supports it. It doesn't show up in driver manager. I'm using nvidia 304 with Mint 18.3; 304 will install with kernels 4.4.x, 4.10.x, and I think 4.13.x, but NOT 4.15...

Re: Files saving to root partition instead of /home after install

The install went smoothly, however when I started to download software, I got a low memory warning and looked into it and it seems all downloads are saving to the root partition instead of the /home partition. If "download software" means install updates and such using the standard methods (apt, sy...

Sure, that works too. But if the user doesn't know which file to edit, using the GUI is easiest way. ;)
Well, I found the file ("find" and "grep" are your friends) but couldn't find it in the GUI.

Re: VLC - SWF

Flemur, I tried to download Adobe Flashplayer, but have run into all sorts of problems just trying to download it. A message from July 12 of an undefined year says they've been messing with it. https://github.com/GerRudi/SimpleR-RotMG/issues/47 I’m wondering if it is still available as one site thr...

Re: Looking for backup answers.

I have discovered that I can back up my desktop, and the Firefox bookmarks, by just drag and drop to my usb thumb drive, Tried that with Thunderbird and ran into Permissions problems, Backup your entire /home/username, then restore the settings/files you think you need in the new OS. My $HOME is < ...

I installed a new SSD on my laptop, and I am sure it's running slower than when it had an old HDD. I just need a non complicated software to read/write and output speeds? Re: VLC - SWF

You could try converting the file in VLC with Media > Convert / Save if it's non interactive. See http://www.vip-video-converter.com/articles/how-can-i-convert-swf-to-mp4-using-vlc/ for full instructions. It doesn't work; it created a 199 byte .mp4 file from the 5.3 MB "Hervey Bay" swf file. No mes...

I’m not saying I know better than you at all. What I am saying is there are more than one swf files that won’t play on VLC, but will play on Flash Movie Player. I’ve uploaded this one to Dropbox as an example. https://www.dropbox.com/s/seknffsk1icndpd/Hervey%20Bay.swf?dl=0 It’s only shots around a ...

There are various versions here, with .deb files, which is nice: https://github.com/Motion-Project/motion/releases OR - You could try gksudo synaptic -> find "motion" ; menu -> package -> force version Edit - you also...

Re: wine and bad fonts

Try
winetricks -> default prefix -> settings -> you'll see the font stuff.

Also
winecfg -> graphics -> resolution (I use 112).

Also make sure you have the microsoft fonts installed, package "ttf-mscorefonts-installer".

Windows can "see" linux filesystems if you install some stuff in windows, e.g.

IIRC, I used Ext2Fsd (Edit: Ext2explore) , and IIRC, it's "read-only". It's still probably better to share an NTFS partition ...
