Re: Whats the smallest device I can currently install Linux Mint on today?

Interesting, but not quite what I had in mind. Think more like an ultra portable Netbook or Tablet PC with detachable matching keyboard.

Define "smallest". Are you referring to physical size?
Yes, I'm referring to physical hardware size. By "small" I mean "most portable". So think physically compact, lightweight, and even thin hardware.

Hi, If I were to buy a new tablet PC with a matching keyboard or a new Netbook or some other similar NEW small, portable PC today, what would be the smallest device I could install and run Linux Mint on? Lets say I walked into a physical Best Buy store today to look at their display model hardware p...

Re: I'm not able to play a DVD in my DVD drive on my PC

Try this: Menu - Terminal Type (use copy/paste to transport this magical incantation to the terminal): sudo apt-get install libdvd-pkg Press Enter. When prompted, type your password. Your password will remain entirely invisible, not even dots will show, this is normal. Whenever the terminal asks yo...

Re: I'm not able to play a DVD in my DVD drive on my PC

When you did the Mint install, there should have been a screen about installing extra codecs and such. Did you tell it to install these extras? I'm pretty sure I did. I don't have the option to install multimedia codecs under menu, sound and video, install multimedia codecs. So maybe that confirms ...

Re: I'm not able to play a DVD in my DVD drive on my PC

With a DVD in the drive, open VLC then click Media, Open Disc. Under Disc Selection, click DVD. Next, for Disk device, select /dev/sr0. Then click Play. Does that do it? If not, check to see if libdvdcss2 is installed. If not, install it. When you did the Mint install, there should have been a scre...

I'm not able to play a DVD in my DVD drive on my PC

Greetings,
I'm wanting to play a DVD I put in my DVD drive. I tried to open and play the disc using VLC media player and it wouldn't open or play the disc. Then I tried Xplayer and it wouldn't work either. What am I doing wrong? I'm currently running Linux Mint 18 Sarah MATE edition.
Thank you

Re: Why won't my PC boot from the optical disc drive so I can install Mint?

Well, my desktop PC finally saw my usb stick after I rebooted the PC with the stick in the USB socket while it was off. Upon turning it back on again, it saw the USB stick with the .iso image and I was able to launch and install Linux Mint 18 finally.

Re: Why won't my PC boot from the optical disc drive so I can install Mint?

What OS did the computer have on it originally ? Did it come with Win10 or was it upgraded to Win10 from Win8.x or Win7? It originally came with Windows 7 installed. The original owner gave me the computer. Then I upgraded Windows 7 to Windows 8. Windows 8 was terrible. So I opted to upgrade to Win...

Re: Just installed Linux Mint 18 and have no internet connection

I went to "driver manager" (as superuser) and it brought up a dialog box with this message:

Drivers cannot be installed. Please connect to the Internet or insert the Linux Mint installation DVD (or USB stick).

I looked in BIOS and couldn't find any listing of "Secure boot" anywhere. The closest I found was a "Quiet boot - enabled" listing.

Just installed Linux Mint 18 and have no internet connection

Greetings,
I just installed Linux Mint 18 to an extra laptop PC I have. It is showing a broken internet link icon down in the bottom right hand corner in the system tray. And indeed I don't have an internet connection. How can I resolve this?
Thank you

Re: Why won't my PC boot from the optical disc drive so I can install Mint?

I found an old USB stick I had laying around. I tried out what you said and it worked to a certain degree. I was successfully able to copy over the .iso image of Linux Mint 18 to the second USB stick I found using "USB writer" in Linux Mint 18 booting up on the DVD and running live on the old laptop...

Well, I would... except I only own one USB stick. It's 16GB in size.

Edit: Hmm, come to think of it, I might have another USB stick laying around somewhere, let me go check.

Re: Why won't my PC boot from the optical disc drive so I can install Mint?

Well, I went to the garage and dug out an old laptop pc I had. I put the DVD disc in the disc drive, booted the machine and it found and booted up the disc with the .iso image with Linux Mint 18 just fine.... no problems. So I know the disc is good, it's just that my newer desktop PC and newer lapto...

DVD-RW are not too reliable for this use.
Can you test the DVD on a different computer?
What should I have used instead?
