Re: Cinnamon v. XFCE v. KDE v. MATE

Cinnamon, XFCE, KDE, and MATE are different types of desktop environment. As the above poster said, you can also install and choose from several if you wish. * Cinnamon: Increasingly popular desktop, notable for being feature rich. Middle-of-the-road resource use * XFCE: Lightweight, highlighly conf...

Re: Multiple Kernels

Anyway, the next LTS release is just a few months away so I don't think anything will be done for Linux Mint 13. As for the next LTS, the development team is reconsidering how to do the non-LTS releases after that--as Ubuntu now only supports those for 9 months instead of previously 18 month. Makes...

How do 'buntu distros tick?

Hi All, I come from Arch, which uses systemd to manage services. So, for example, if I installed a new display manager, or installed NetworkManager, I'd initiate it like this: sudo systemctl enable <whatever>.service To disable: sudo systemctl disable <whatever>.service How does this sort of thing w...

Re: Multiple Kernels

Well, Ubuntu 12.04.3 (LTS) now comes with 3.8, which Cannonical has made LTS. If there were at least a special PPA or something with stable LTS kernels users could switch to, then that would make sense. Otherwise, Mint could even dispense with short-term/LTS releases altogether by allowing users to ...

Multiple Kernels

Hi guys, A major selling point of Manjaro Linux is the easy use of multiple kernels. I don't think many people release that just about any distro can use these, or in principal how this can be done with relative ease with Ubuntu and its derivatives (e.g. Mint). Even if this were just for the LTS ker...

Hello from an ex-Arch user

Hi everyone! I've been using Linux for almost two years. For about one year of that I was a developer with Manjaro Linux, a user-friendly Arch-based distro. I was responsible for their wiki (about 80-90% is mine, hence my name usually being in screenshots), documentation (i.e. the .pdf manual) and t...

[How To] Fix the Virtualbox "rc=1908" / vboxdrv Error

So, you've just installed virtualbox, set up a virtual machine, and as soon as you try to start it - BAM! - an "rc=1908" error message pops up. It may also state something to do with running the following command, which won't work either: /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup The reason nothing works is because...

The Screen Dimming Problem - is this a deliberate ploy?

Hi Guys, I'm relatively new to Linux (a few months) and particularly to Mint (not even a couple of weeks). I already fancy myself as a die-hard Linux user, and particularly love the Mint distro. Anyway, like a few other people, I had an issue with the screen dimming after removing Windows to install...
