Re: How update ia32-libs & ia32-libs-gtk (transitional packe
I use ia32-multiarch to run 32-bit programs. Now even this says it is transitional, so I am not surprised the older ia32's are not working.

Re: firewall settings
You will have to enable gufw every time you boot, yes. Just open gufw, and click on 'Unlock' in the bottom-right corner. It will open a pop-up for your password, then you can change things in gufw. Here is a link on gufw: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Gufw And another with more detail, which has...

Re: some questions about linux
Well, you certainly have a lot to learn about Linux, and Linux communities. I don't understand most of your complaints, but I will try to address the one I do, firewalls. Are you aware of ufw (Uncomplicated Firewall) and gufw (the GUI version of ufw). These both are part of a standard Mint install, ...

Re: MATE vs CINNAMON vs KDE
If you want lots of effects and flexibility, but not a lot of overhead, I would recommend Enlightenment. However, last time I tried the e17 package in the Mint repo with my Mint 13 (Maya) install, it reliably seg-faulted every time I tried to do anything past logging in. It could have been an issue...

jc,
Those are certainly some good reasons! Although I haven't had anyone steal my identity, I can relate to the rest. Good luck making the switch!

Re: I'm seriously considering switching to Linux Mint....
So, why do you want to switch to Mint? It seems you have a long list of reasons NOT to switch! Unless you are willing to spend quite a lot of time trying to make things work, and it will take a lot of time, even if just to track down and install all the new apps you need, and learn how to use them, ...

W3.3: "It reminds me of the blue screen of death, and it makes me feel like I need to buy you a new computer." This one was beyond funny! I loved seeing you stumped, too! ;) These vids are so charming! You two are so funny together. Thanks so much to making them, I have really enjoyed watching them!...

Re: Mother's first experience with Linux Mint 14 (Cinnamon)
Looked at the Ubuntu one. That is the number one thing I hate about Unity, is the disconnected toolbar. I have apps/windows open all over the screen, want my menus at the window, NOT at the top of the screen! I can't wait to see how your Mum does with Mint, I am thinking she is going to be delighted...

Re: Mother's first experience with Linux Mint 14 (Cinnamon)
The Mint one says it is currently unavailable, but I watched the W8 one. I will check back to see if the Mint one becomes available. The W8 one was very interesting in s lot of ways! I do have one comment, STOP SNICKERING AT YOUR MUM! She is being such an awesome sport, and very good-natured. I prob...

Re: moving on from Linux Mint 11
I am surprised Vincent didn't say this, so I will: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE WHATEVER you do, separate homes, anything, back up ALL your user-generated files before you do any new installations! (It's not a bad idea even before a major update/upgrade.) Mint actually has a nice simple back-up utility that...

Re: Let's talk about desktop environments.
True, remoulder. Maybe we'll be reduced to scouring abandoned buildings like in the apocalyptic movies, to find hardware in 10 years. If so, I guess I'll have to find another hobby. I'll miss Linux, though.

Re: Let's talk about desktop environments.
remoulder, I do agree with you and Miguel de Icaza any chance there ever was for Linux to be a mainstream desktop is long lost. I will go beyond what he says about 'technical fields' and say that in my field, isolation and characterization of proteins, it's non-existent. Everything is Windows based,...

Re: SSD for Dummies Quick Question
Yes, use ext4. It doesn't take care of the other things, in fact some of them are needed partially b/c ext4 is a 'journaling' file system; earlier versions, such as ext2, weren't, but ext4 really is best to use. The '0' and '1' are actually other fields in the fstab, it is not part of the field you ...

Re: Let's talk about desktop environments.
Personally, I love all the options available with Linux. Beyond the basic requirement of being willing to work and learn, and not just use, you can find or build pretty much anything you want. I started with MATE, was great while I learned, tried KDE and hated it, went back to MATE, found it had too...

Re: SSD for Dummies Quick Question
Really, you all may be going a bit overboard on SSD panic. ;) I have a Samsung 830 128 GB, have used it for a couple of months, and really have no complaints. On the other hand, I can't see that it is noticeably faster than my 1TB SATA III HDD. I mostly like it b/c it is easy to take in and out of m...

Or, if you want to install KDE graphically, with a bit more info and context provided, use the Software Manager or Synaptic. Really, you can have several DEs (desktop environments) installed, then just click the 'sessions' button (the middle one) on the login screen to select the one you want to use...
