Re: kernel problems

Hi, I tried the live usb of Mint 20.1 "Ulyssa" (Cinnamon, 64-bit, Linux kernel 5.4) on an ACER 2540 (i5 7200U), it seems to work, but there are kernel issues: None of those are kernel issues. They are issues with your machine. Your BIOS is not fully ACPI compatible, your boot device doesn...

Re: USB-sticks random re-mount

I got some "history" to tell but to not mislead by this, I'm awaiting to tell until someone got an theory about my problem. We don't need history. The problem is likely to be the hub. Isolate it from the problem by plugging your flash drives directly into the machine. If the problem persi...

Re: Linux Mint website privacy concerns.

My suggestion is to remove any third-party connections to Google ... So, do you intend to fund the lost revenue out of your own pocket? Or do you intend to make sure that Linux Mint dies from starvation of funds? Your operating system is free, as in beer. It has to be paid for somehow, and google a...

Re: CPU running 97% while teaching on zoom, anything I can do to lighten the load?

I thought the i7 would be better, still underpowered? That's because of Intel's marketing. An i7 on a laptop is a very far cry from an i7 on a desktop, and the two should not be confused. The only thing that you can realistically do without spending money is to try the Mint xfce edition. If that do...

Re: CPU running 97% while teaching on zoom, anything I can do to lighten the load?

... to be honest tho the whole system feels incredibility sluggish, not sure why ... I am sure why. The moment you push a machine to do things it was never bought for is the moment that you get the issues you are now experiencing. I seriously doubt that any of your machines were ever intended to ru...

I would plant jequirity beans, wintersweet, jessamine, monkshood, belladonna, hemlock...

And put up a small sign that said, "Warning: Toxic plants. Please feel free to steal them."

And of course, therein lies the reason that you now have the 32-bit architecture installed.

Also, if you are horrified by what you see in the logs, don't read them.

I've been considering doing the same with my Mate setup which is my primary system for day to day work.
If the current kernel on the MATE system is working without issues, then there is no need to even bother considering another kernel.

I've been introduced to Linux the year Ubuntu 5.0 was realised... The biggest disappointment right now is Timeshift.. Once it starts, walk away for 15 minutes, pull my hair out and wait for a hog to finish and give me access again... So don't use it. Work out a different method to restore your syst...

Re: Adding a RAID card - what connector is this?

That's mdadm software RAID? Yes, and it's fairly straightforward but you need an extra drive. I install to a small, single SATA SSD, create the RAID in mdadm, rsync the root of the SATA SSD to the root volume of the RAID, chroot into the RAID root, install grub on the first device in the RAID set, ...

Re: Adding a RAID card - what connector is this?

By the way, since I have a running Linux Mint 19.1 install with all MySQL, PHP, and a development environment combined with years of customizations, is there a way to take that existing installation and replicate it onto the RAID array? Clonezilla? Yes, and it's your very lucky day because the 6805...

Be careful buying from Chinese vendors on eBay. Some of them are just crooks that will take your money and vanish.

Re: Adding a RAID card - what connector is this?

The $US50 Adaptec 6805T card appears to be discontinued and I can only find $80 refurbished or junkyard dealer ones. I can't tell if they're junk or not. I would buy one on eBay from China, along with the correct cable. I have a number of these cards bought from eBay China and they work fine. https...

Re: Adding a RAID card - what connector is this?

Would this work? No, absolutely not. You should have done your research before buying, not after. Those cards are designed for Dell PowerEdge servers. They need a proprietary backplane cable and likely also a backplane card, then the backplane needs additional SAS to SATA cables to the drives, or y...
