Re: Headless?

I also followed instructions I found on how to modify xorg.conf, only it wasn't there so I created it. It didn't work, though. I would prefer not to have to go get a KVM. There has to be a way to get the gui to boot without a monitor -- no?

Re: Can't get vsync to work

I'm running mate, and if I turn off compositing, VLC will play videos without tearing. Youtube, however, still has tearing, and inkscape also shows tearing when I draw shapes and things. I have a desktop with an nvidia graphics card, and a laptop without one. Both have the same problem. If I go into...

Re: Getting my MCE remote to work properly

Thanks for the reply. Sorry I didn't respond. I actually created a new post because I forgot that I had opened this one. So, in a nutshell, I determined that lirc is working, but once I correctly identified and configured my remote, the plug-and-play audio control stopped working. I used to be able ...

Re: Some newbie questions (indicators, theming, panel applet

I have a similar question. What themes are known to deliver a consistent theme across gtk2/gtk3 and others? In mint 13, I could only get Mint-X and Mint-Z to look good across the board (and I think one called Awiarta or something like that). Now with Mint 14, Mint-Z is gone, and when I download and ...

Re: Hiding (not removing) foreign language fonts

OK, well you definately answered my question, then. I remember when I was on Windows, if you removed the foreign fonts, suddenly you couldn't see any non-roman characters anywhere. I'll uninstall them now. thank you!

Hiding (not removing) foreign language fonts

Is there a way to simply hide them? I like being able to see foreign languages. If I'm on Wikipedia, I like seeing the name of the Taj Mahal in Hindi, rather than squares or garbled characters. However, I don't read or write in this language and would never need to select it from a list of fonts in ...

Re: Truecrypt won't encrypt files in Mint 13

My specs are very similar to Bob's and I am having the exact same problem. However, I had a truecrypt volume that worked just fine. It was only 3.5 gb and I ran out of space, so I made a 14gb one. The last one was fat, I think, and the new one is ntfs, because I received a warning that if it's over ...

Getting my MCE remote to work properly

Hi, I have a Gateway RC6 Windows Media Center Edition infrared remote control. Gateway slapped their logo on it but the manufacturer is SMK. I hooked it up and noticed that right away, the mute button was working correctly, and in XBMC the arrow and playback buttons worked. However, not all buttons ...

Re: A few problems running mint from my USB stick

I tried mounting /home like that, and it was a hassle and mint wouldn't boot unless the USB was present. Here is what I did to solve the problem, and I think it's the best solution: Let's say you have a user you're already using and it's called 'userstick'. Create another user named 'userbox'. Then ...

Re: [HowTo] Electric Sheep screensaver (13 MATE)

I got it to work. Nice!

Is electric sheep rasterized? Maybe I don't totally understand the concept. When I use Project M, I can see that my GPU is really cranking out the geometry, that it's rendering things in real time. Electric Sheep looks a little rasterized and compressed to me.

Re: A few problems running mint from my USB stick

OK, so it looks like it's possible to edit my fstab file and mount a different /home directory. However, is it possible to do this with a symlink? Here's the idea: on my hard drive's /home partition, I have my user folder, and then I have a symlink to a different user folder, the one on my USB drive...

Re: Can't update database on iOS5.1, ideas?

My understanding is that Mint is mounting the iPod as a mass storage device. This means that it will copy files to the ipod, but it doesn't update the database. I've tried deleting files as well, and indeed, they are then removed from the ipod, so when I go to play that song, it lists the title but ...

Re: An itunes replacement for my ipod touch 3g

Well, after playing around with Banshee, it became clear that it isn't going to work. I think my firmware (5) is too new. Clementine is probably the way to go. Even GTKpod crashes and slows to a crawl. Maybe it's time to jailbreak, I don't know. Any advice would be appreciated.

AlbertP wrote:You can set the swappiness to 0 to avoid swap usage:

Code: Select all

gksudo gedit /etc/sysctl.conf
In this file please add a line:

vm.swappiness = 0
I did this, but I'm still seeing memory use at 600m (17%) and swap at 384k. Do I need to reboot for this to take effect?

Was this ever resolved? I would also like to get that 'GB Hard Disk' information out of there, and neither gparted nor gnome disk utility solves the problem.

Re: A few problems running mint from my USB stick

I never see it using swap. What about this: maybe it's possible to add a new user. Let's say I call this user 'tomthumb'. I could go into /home on my HD, create a symlink called 'tomthumb' that actually points to a real directory, tomthumb, on the /home partition of my USB. Then, when I boot into th...

Re: Alt+Tab switching is pretty slow

I have 1.2.0-2+precise. What repo do I need to add to get the latest?

Also, I installed the newest Mint, pretty recently, and I update pretty regularly. Am I doing something wrong, if I don't automatically have things like this?

Re: A few problems running mint from my USB stick

OK, for now I would like to keep the swap partition on my USB and just not use it, or use it sparingly. Can I enable a different swap partition 'on-the-fly', in gparted? Is there a different way to do it? Do I need to reboot for the changes to take effect?
