be careful when installing OS make sure you backup all your important files in case you format all disks by mistake. you can try linux mint without installing also just download the ISO file which flavor you want and just try it on live first and see if everythings working sounds/videocard etc. then...

so i think its more suggested to use the ati driver on the website for more performance if its still supported otherwise you can use the opensource driver for ati built in the distros

are you sure your iso is saved properly. during live boot mode if im not mistaken there is an option to check the cd if its working properly if im not mistaken its the last option

try this guide was able to get alsa working by installing libasound2-dev thanks to http://forum.enlightenment.org/comments.php?DiscussionID=408 I tried installing emodule-exalt thinking that might do the trick, when to my horror it trashed network-manager. Had to boot from live cd to download the NM...

i usually try the live cd first and check if everythings working fine. or if something is not working usually i check if there is a solution then thats the time i install linux mint in their computer

try the 32 bit. as what i heard some people experience problems using x64 versions. might be compatibility problems

remastersys is good if you gonna install from scratch and make an image of it. otherwise if he don't want some installed applications i think aptoncd will do the job?

try to click mint menu then type hardware drivers. any drivers their which isnt activated yet?
