Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

@GizmoChicken: Thanks for your response! I updated my how-to and put a link to both the Xen forum and your post here. I really hope Asus fixes this IOMMU issue in their next BIOS release. It would be also nice to see that they take Linux users more serious and invest a little in it (e.g. Linux supp...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

Okay, managed to get Xen to boot. It was a problem with the newer version. Downgraded to the version that works, and it boots now. Cinnamon is broken (no bottom panel/mint menu, keyboard doesn't work, no title bars for windows), but I can fix that later. I'll continue with the guide and come back i...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

For those of you who are using the xl toolstack with Xen 4.2, have any of you had any luck getting virt-manager to work? I've been having the same problem and have basically given up on getting it to work at this stage.' Hi Dez, Thanks much for the reply. The problem with virt-manager seems to stem...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

Please accept my apologies if this is too far off topic, but.... For those of you who are using the xl toolstack with Xen 4.2, have any of you had any luck getting virt-manager to work? In my case, although virt-manager works great with Xen 4.2 when using the xm toolstack, I've had no luck getting v...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

I downloaded the 4.2 hypervisor and compiled it. Eventually after 2 trials it didn't complain. However, I gave up when I didn't succeed in inserting the graphics card BIOS, a procedure that is needed for Nvidia cards that don't have native passthrough capability (the majority of Nvidia cards). So, ...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

@powerhouse: You wrote the bulk of your original tutorial based on your experiences with Xen 4.1 which, if I'm not mistaken, uses xm/xend as its default toolstack. Have you tried configuring VGA/PCI passthrough with Xen 4.2, which uses xl as its default toolstack? If so, were any modifications to yo...

Re: Xen dom0 with Nvidia proprietary driver

I come more and more to the conclusion that I will replace my 6450 very soon. Hell, it can't even scroll a browser without showing diagonal distortions. I don't care if it's the card or the driver (AMD proprietary driver which seems to work fine otherwise, I mean except for poor performance of the ...

Re: HOW-TO create the ultimate gaming/graphics machine with

Have you tried it, or are you going to try it? I haven't tried VGA passthrough yet. My processor (an AMD Phenom II X4) supports AMD-V, so I'm good with many aspects of Xen. But my motherboard (a Gigabyte GA-770TA-UD3) doesn't support IOMMU, so I'm not quite ready for VGA passthrough. When I get aro...

Re: Xen dom0 with Nvidia proprietary driver

@powerhouse: Thanks once again for all the information. Extremely helpful! Yep, since my only use for a graphical desktop is, at least on this system, to play video, including streaming flash video, a Quadro 2000 is way beyond my needs (and budget). So like you said, a cheaper AMD would probably be ...

Re: Xen dom0 with Nvidia proprietary driver

@powerhouse: Thanks so much for the extra info. Much appreciated! And yep, I would definitely stick with a Xen/Linux combo if I could get it working sufficiently well without spending a bunch more on hardware. No hurry, but if you have some time, would you mind answering a few questions? They are: 1...

Re: Xen dom0 with Nvidia proprietary driver

@powerhouse: Thanks again for all the additional info! Yep, I'll definitely give an AMD GPU a try. About VirtualBox, the newer versions take advantage of VT-x/AMD-V technology found on many newer CPUs. Using that feature, VirtualBox can be nearly as fast as Xen for many applications. If you haven't ...

Re: Xen dom0 with Nvidia proprietary driver

@powerhouse: Thanks much for the additional information! I'm guessing that you are using GPU passthrough to your Quadro 2000 to get the Windows Experience Index of 7.0 in a Windows VM running as domU. True? Also, you mention that "even youtube video on full screen stutters" with the AMD 64...

Re: Xen dom0 with Nvidia proprietary driver

@powerhouse: Thanks so much for posting your findings. I've been pulling my hair out trying to get Nvidia proprietary drivers to work with Ubuntu 12.04 as dom0 under the Xen 4.1 hypervisor. Good to know I'm not the only one having trouble with Nvidia. I'll follow your lead and will try a Radeon 6450...
