Now that you're hacked, allow strong passwords

It looks like some guy was able to randomly downloading sensitive info from your database? Bummer. I thought I'd suggest allowing people to use actual strong passwords for their accounts on the forums. I just read the email regarding your security fail and tried updating my password with an auto-gen...

Re: Correct Defaults for Arduino/ Embedded Device Security

There are a lot of additional udev rules out there, for different pieces of hardware. Perhaps this is a topic better in the tutorials sections or in the hardware review database? The code I posted was a workaround to allow people to use an Arduino-like flasher the same way it can be done in windows...

Correct Defaults for Arduino/ Embedded Device Security

The TL;DR is that users in the adm group are not given write access to Arduinos wich are learning devices used in the education field to teach students about embedded devices. There's also a chip flasher produced by Adafruit that, to work properly, requires users to craft an obscure string and place...

Re: Desktop mysteriously replaced with black void

I've finally discovered something. When booting up, the desktop doesn't load, but after everything is booted up, you can click the menu button on Cinnamon and then click the folder icon on the left hand side. Then as expected, nemo will pop open. But as an added bonus, the desktop will mysteriously ...

Re: Desktop mysteriously replaced with black void

I've been doing some playing around and I can install xfce and... well, it looks a lot lamer than Cinnamon, there seems to be no menu bar, but there's a flexbar??? So maybe that's how XFCE is meant to be played, idk, but the point is, I have a desktop in that mode, but all the icons look really real...

Re: Desktop mysteriously replaced with black void

Update: I'm finding that my laptop crashes when trying to test the memory... probably the cause for this weirdness... Update: Actually my l1 cache is showing as 032kb instead of 256kb which might indicate some other kind of h/w problem. After attempting to run memtest and swapping ram, I encountered...

Desktop mysteriously replaced with black void [solved]

Everything has been working fine for me and my laptop since Linux Mint 14 (I'm now on LM15). So... a couple days ago I was minding my own business ejecting a USB drive and I suffer a hard freeze; nothing worked, the mouse didn't even move, and the screen was still up. I gave it some time to think, t...

Re: LM Menu's in LM 14 > google... LM15 not so much

Ah, it makes sense if what they did was intentional on behalf of the community's request. I can see that very few (if any others) were using the menu bar to search settings to tweak so it's probably for the best that said menu be kept clean and minimal. I wonder now if the "power" dialog was left in...

LM Menu's in LM 14 > google... LM15 not so much

Hey, so it's been a while since I've been feeding back to the community. I'm just lazy I guess. I'd really like to be focusing on Sea Quest (which is a better series than I though it would be based on the first couple episodes). Anyway, there's a few things I don't totally "dig" in LM 15. I used to ...

Re: linux mint installed packages, filter by date installed

Thanks Xenopeek, I just made too aliases so I don't forget the commands. This would be a nice feature to get into the Cinnamon package manager, especially if it could detect whether the hit is currently installed. # Linux specific aliases alias latest-installs='grep " install " /var/log/dpkg.*' alia...

linux mint installed packages, filter by date installed

Is there a way for me to pull up a list of installed packages and sort them by their install date? I've recently been having some system stability problems and I'm wondering if I installed something bizarre which may have sent me down this spiral.

I tried to follow, but what do you mean with spam click? Oh sorry, I forget when I'm being colloquial sometimes. By spam clicking, I just mean clicking an excessive number of times. For instance, in google chrome, when you have say 5 tabs open, you can spam click the 2nd tabs close button until all...

LM 14, random logouts

I'm experiencing random logouts using Linux Mint 14. I don't think it happened until I switched to my new laptop, and then changed the AMD graphics drivers to a 'legacy' version. Here's what I pulled up from my syslog which seems to precipitate the logout: May 4 10:35:38 obelisk gnome-session[2051]:...

Re: No menu button

What you described is not what I would consider normal LM behavior; something's gone wrong. I'm not sure that I can help, but what happens when you hit the 'windows key'. Oh, and are you using LM Cinnamon, MATE, or the one with Xs in the name? Each flavor of LM will provide a different experience, b...

Re: How to set up a server on Linux Mint 13

The word server is a bit vague. A server is a central computer that other computers (clients) interact with. There are file servers (samba, ftp, etc), VPN servers, http servers, ssh servers (i guess), etc. But it almost sounds like you want to "network" the computers, which is even more vague. There...

Re: Mass Market Customer Expectations

The features I look for in a dock are: -Right click a running application to pin to dock -Starting apps, switching to apps, and closing apps is handled by the same icon in the same spot -The number of running instances are indicated by the app's icon --docky only counts to 2 =( -Mouseovering an ico...

Re: Mass Market Customer Expectations

Concerning docks: One thing I often wonder, is why the need for a separate dock application, such as Docky, AWN, Cairo? I can create the same functionality/appearance with both Xfce panels or KDE. It would seem that the same is possible with Gnome 3, but I don't use it so I don't know. Not sure wha...

Re: Mass Market Customer Expectations

I think you've got some good ideas here, but I don't think the solution is to clone the mobile phone experience. Trying to be more like a mobile device is exactly why windows 8 is the colossal failure that it is. Literally no one who 'uses computers' likes windows 8. Old, terrible windows-only IT pe...

Nemo - bread crums file path to always have a leftward crum

There's been something that's been bugging me about Nemo's bread crum system that I didn't realize was bugging me until now. So here's the scenario and proposed solution. Let's say you navigate through a project you're working on. (imaging the below syntax represents the breadcrum file path in nemo)...
