Re: Ugh! I hate partitioning!

As hinto said you can click "Change" (I think it is the + sign at the bottom) or you can double-click on the partition you want. You will get this pop-up window where you chose "Mount Point: / - or Mount Point: /home installScreenshot.png there are no "change" or + buttons. https://www.dropbox.com/...

Re: Ugh! I hate partitioning!

When you are running the installer, choose "manual" you'll then see your partitions that the installer sees. highlight where you want /, then press change and select / mount point. (swap will automatically be found) both / and swap will be re-formatted. (you probably want ext4) highlight where you ...

Re: Ugh! I hate partitioning!

ok. last headache.......

partitions are created, i highlight root to install in, then it complains "please select a root partition......"

since gparted does labels, not mount points.

<sigh>

i tried fdisk - l but it won't do it as it says fdisk is not in sbin.

ideas?

Re: Ugh! I hate partitioning!

ME  there would several O/Ss or more on it :o but for you: same thing again - rest of hdd is /home ( 450Gb ) or maybe split that into a /data area as well ( 200Gb each ) but that /data & the /swap would have to be in a logical partition, contained in the extended area. so - if you are unsure, ...

Re: Ugh! I hate partitioning!

on some of my laptops, which have only a 80Gb hdd, - followed my traditional method of partitioning: - 10Gb = / root - 69Gb = /home - 1Gb = /swap then, using the installer, pointed to each partition in turn, then clicked on next .. .. - so - all of those partitions - were a Primary Partition - no l...

Re: Ugh! I hate partitioning!

Pierre wrote:that looks fine ..
and that is about what the auto installer would do, anyway.

you can still do that manually, yourself though,
and use the something else option
how would the installer do it?

not in LMDE, right?

Re: Ugh! I hate partitioning!

I don't use /boot either. Both /boot and /data are a matter of taste. The only reason I use /home is so I can re-install without losing my data in /home. -H yeah, i thought the install made /boot automatically.... anyway..... my schema (500GB HD): swap = 4096 / = 102400 primary ext4 extended - rest...

Re: Ugh! I hate partitioning!

I don't use /data. I just use swap (controversial sizes, but I use 5 gb since I use virtualization), / (20 gb since /tmp is there, too), /home (the rest). I don't find myself sharing anything important across Win/Linux boundaries. I do however use dropbox to keep my thunderbird address books in syn...

Re: RE: Ugh! I hate partitioning!

so should i put the /data as a logical in the extended along with /home? Why? You need a place to keep your personal files like music, documents, etc. So you need EITHER a /data partition or a /home partition, not both. well, you can't create a logical w/o an extended i learned for one..... /data i...

Re: RE: Ugh! I hate partitioning!

just first 2 questions please. as of now, i have the extended partition blank and the logical within it "/home". do i need "/data"? how will that affect my sizing scheme? The decision to have a separate /home partition or not, or a separate /data partition instead of a separate /home partition are ...

Re: RE: Ugh! I hate partitioning!

okay - lets starts again: sudo fdisk -l paste that into the terminal, - note: that's a lower case L - *not* a No. 1. paste the results back here. - then how many partitions do you want?. 2 or 3 ? - / root,, /home,, /swap,, /data whatever. .. 1. should i label the extended AND logical /home? 2. i di...

more partitioning woes

ok. so i figured out how to get my logical /home.... now i'm learning gparted doesn't make mount points, just labels. SO WHAT'S THE POINT OF ALL THIS IF I CAN'T EVEN GET AN INSTALLABLE HARD DRIVE/PARTITION TABLE??????!!!! before i pull the rest of my precious hair out, will someone please just get m...

Re: UGH!!! I HATE PARTITIONING!!!

Alright, LMDE does not have a "use whole disk" option; that's the main edition only. If I am not mistaken, I think that you're thinking that ext4 creates an extended partition. While I don't know much of the intricacies of the ext4 filesystem, it does not create the extended partition needed (in GP...

Re: UGH!!! I HATE PARTITIONING!!!

Hello paradive - I might be wrong, but I think you might have skipped a step. After you create the second primary partition, you need to create an "extended" partition using the rest of the space on the disk. Once you have done this, you can then create a "logical" ext4 partition within the extende...

Re: installation freezing

Probably a good idea, but remember, if the iso file is faulty, burning all the DVDs in the world won't help it boot! Checking the md5sum will tell you if the iso is good or corrupted. well, fownloading a new ISO worked. now having this problem: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=187811

Re: UGH!!! I HATE PARTITIONING!!!

isn't the first option - use whole disc ?. can you paste a screen_shot of that Gparted option, that is causing you some issues. i've went back and forward 10 times. there is no "use whole disc" option. maybe it isn't included with debian edition for some reason?.... anyway, i'm doing: swap = 4096 /...
