you need the intel driver, not the generic vesa driver.

the compiz effects go back to default without the intel driver, see my post below if you need help changing the driver:

just fyi, you can run compiz on an Eee pc, so that spec you listed should have NO problem.

seriously tho, I installed xubuntu 8.04 on an old celeron based rig with 128mb RAM... and it was actually pretty snappy.

try the XFCE version of mint and get back to us.

the toolbar issue seems to have corrected itself... i dragged it from the top of the screen to the bottom and it seems happy there, prior to that I was changing the orientation through the properties / preferences.
