Re: Suggestions for Cinammon based on KDE

Well, I couldn't get the openSUSE torrent download to work (bad sign), and Kubuntu's Muon Software Center seems a bit off (can't find Skype, for example, probably related to http://askubuntu.com/questions/141814/lord-of-ultima-and-bit-trip-runner-not-available-in-muon-software-centre), so I think I'...

Suggestions for Cinammon based on KDE

I run KDE on my desktop and Cinammon with Nautilus on my laptop (13 edition). I'm noticing a few things that I don't like with Cinammon which KDE seems to do better: 1. In my research on default applications, I found that Nautilus/Nemo is not showing the extension names - see http://forums.linuxmint...

Re: Can't set Adobe Reader as default application

Note that when Jon N talks about System Settings->File Associations, he's probably talking about KDE which has this menu. KDE seems to make it easier to configure default file associations. I commented on this over at http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=100362&p=649250#p649250 ("[SOLVED...

Re: [SOLVED] How to set default programs/applications?

The correct answer to setting a default is not this. See http://www.libre-software.net/change-the-default-application-ubuntu-linux titled "How to change the default application for a given type of file in Ubuntu Linux" for example. Basically, right-click and there will be a "Properties" menu. There'...

Re: How to install KDE dual boot?

Wish you would have linked to the manual set-up. I'm flying a bit blind here, but I'll just dive in I guess.

Re: Capitalizing home directory names?

Thanks! If there's a standard, I can't complain I guess. Capitalized and uncapitalized directory names is not the only inconsistency in Linux.

Hopefully, none whatsoever in the distribution.
Why not?

Capitalizing home directory names?

I noticed that the directory names in /home are capitalized. Why is that? I find it annoying and Windowish, and more annoying because Linux is case-sensitive. Consistency is clean and gives me that minty feeling, and this isn't consistent.

Any chance of changing them to lowercase?

Re: Package management, Skype and other questions

OK about changing the topic. Incidentally, with regard to my topic about clarifying the Linux Filesystem Hierarchy Standard, it turns out that such a project was announced by the Linux Foundation April 2011 (http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/lsb/fhs) and the home for that project...

Improving signal to noise; wikis or improved tutorials

Hey, I'm posting this after having some issues and questions with Skype discussed at http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=115209. I installed Skype 4 and found that my webcam didn't work. I found http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/219 but it didn't seem to work. A close read of...

Package management, Skype and other questions

I'd rather have a standard, so that everyone puts these types of things in the same place. I knew that I could put them wherever I want. While allowing that technically is OK, if there's no specific recommendation than you're promoting a messy operating system. If the Linux overall standard doesn't ...

Re: How to install software on Linux Mint

What directory should we install the tarballs to? The Filesystem Hierarchy Standard at http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html#OPTADDONAPPLICATIONSOFTWAREPACKAGES suggests that /opt might be the right place, altho I'm not sure what "add-on" means exactly. (And no, I don't want to hear stuff usi...
