Your post doesn't give enough information other than you have a .zip file. What's in the zip? zip file = compressed file, I mean what's the command in terminal for installation Please tell us what the compressed(zip) file contains. Just list out the contents. Is there a .bin file? Just double click...

How come he managed to update with apt-get but the update manager is not working? I am a bit confused.

If this works then try

I don't think the Workspace Switcher applet has an option to name the individual desktops.

Will the next Mint release have the window controls on the left of the window bar as it is right now in the alpha releases of Lucid Lynx? If yes, will there be an option to change it to the right?

What are the chance that you have dust/dirt in your keyboard? It could be a harware problem for all we know. Try vacuuming it.

mintMenu text doesn't seem to follow Gnome guidelines

When the main panel is positioned to either the right or the left of the screen, the text on the mintMenu button i.e. by default 'Menu', is aligned in the opposite direction when compared to the text in the Clock applet on the panel. Are you not able to enable any visual effects? You can right click on the desktop>Change Desktop Background>Visual Effects. Select normal and see if it works.
