Re: Running Powertop automatically on boot.

Thanks again, Kato 181.

I suspect I may have seen most of what you've dug out, but I'm grateful for your effort and will go through them slowly.

Cheers,

Re: Running Powertop automatically on boot.

Thanks for the reply Kato 181, Yes, batteries on both mouse and keyboard are fine. My query relates not just to the settings for PT, but also making them persist from one boot to the next. I can easily make an adjustment to the settings for PT, but would be happier if the machine could tend to this ...

Running Powertop automatically on boot.

HI all, I have an Inspiron 7000 series 15" laptop. If left to its own devices, battery drains in a little over 2.5 hours in Linux. In Windows, things are about 2-3 times better. When I run Powertop battery life is somewhere above 6 hours which is plenty for me. To get PT to run successfully on boot,...

nVidia driver preventing logout Mint KDE 18.2

Hi all, I have a fresh install of Mint 18.2 KDE and it is going pretty well with no issues so far. Except... I used the Driver Manager to install the nVidia drivers instead of the default, and while everything is still going well, I find that when I'm using the nVidia GPU, the logout screen accessed...

Re: If you are having problems with Mint18 Cinnamon and Nvidia drivers read this

Many thanks, hellguy. This worked a treat, although in my case I was almost at the end of your excellent instructions prior to arriving at a solution.

Re: Corrupt USB Thumbdrive?

I've had this same issue myself, and I've struggled with it, even where I've repartitioned and formatted in Windows, where I could add and delete files. Often, after a reboot of my Mint machine, I found success with writing to the drive. In Mint 18, I've found that Menu > Preferences > Disks will wo...

Re: Question on installing proprietary nvidia cards

I've just spent a fair amount of time looking into the issue of battery consumption on my laptop. I found that toggling between the Intel and nVidia chip makes only a small difference to battery life on my current machine. However, on my elderly Asus, it made a big difference. Currently I can double...

Re: [SOLVED] Excessive battery consumption

I installed Mint 18, and found little difference to the battery life. Installing tlp made a marginal increase. I also found that switching back to the Nouveau driver increased battery life by almost 100% - to around 6 hours, maybe more, over the nVidia drivers for the Intel gpu. Performance differen...

Re: Excessive battery consumption

Installing TLP made some difference - I now have close to 3 hours, but that's still quite poor.

I think I might try installing Mint 18 to see if there's any difference - all my data is safe, so it might be an hour well-spent.

Re: Excessive battery consumption

Thanks all, I shall dive into BIOS and see if I can find speedstep, although I don't recall seeing it. I have TLP installed. It made no difference, but maybe I need to tweak it a little. EDIT: no, I did not have tlp installed. I was certain that I had, but when I decided to try tweaking its config f...

[SOLVED] Excessive battery consumption

HI, I have an Alienware 17 R3, with an i7 and 970M chip. It is fitted with Killer wifi and LAN connection. I have a 128 GB Samsung SSD for Windows (which it came with) and I have a separate 256 GB SSD for Linux; I also keep data on a third SSD (an Evo 850, from memory). A while ago, I installed Mint...

Issues with second monitor on laptop via HDMI

I have a shiny new Mint 17.3 install. Kernel is 4.2.0-36. My machine is an Alienware R3 17" laptop with the nVidia 970M card. Drivers are the recommended 352 as per the Driver Manager. I tend to use the machine as a desktop replacement, and find my larger monitor (Dell 29") gives me better screen re...

Thanks so much for all your efforts, Jeremy B. - I am very grateful for the time and effort you've put into this.

Re: Trouble with Killer 1535 Wireless support

Any errors from sudo apt-get install build-essential None Also install sudo apt-get install libc6-dev as that package has the locale.h file That also seems to have gone smoothly. Then you should be able to cd ~/backports-4.4.2-1 make defconfig-wifi make sudo make install Did that - it took several ...
