Re: Backup for Dual Boot Syatem

Two minutes? That's keyboard time, right? The backup process itself takes a couple hours... It takes a few minutes with modern technology. I can backup 3 standard 250GB SSDs plus an NVMe SSD in under ten minutes to hard disk. It takes two minutes to backup the NVMe on its own, and not much longer t...

but it's an option you should consider.
Albeit with very high risk, and not something that the seasoned regulars would ever recommend.

I am prompted to ask the following question: Using Linux Mint 19.1 with MATE desktop, and the Kernel being 4.15.0-46, what could be causing the problem and how can I Stop it?
In all likelihood it may have nothing to do with LM or the kernel, and is possibly due to dust bunnies or poor cooling.

Re: Behringer U-Phoria UM2 Does not connect

Does someone have an Idea what I can do? Run alsamixer from a terminal. Use F6 to select a sound card and see if it's displayed. If it is, select it and ensure the master output is turned up. Then, even if it's not seen in alsamixer, install pavucontrol and see if that detects it. Failing that, ens...

You've surprised me! When did 1TB flash drives become so cheap and available? SSDs are still darned expensive by comparison.
Ten bucks on fleabay. They'd probably the fake ones everyone who bought one has been complaining about. The real ones are pushing a grand.

That's weird if you think about it: for many years following that era, computer use/programming has been a man-only activity. In the early 90s, I didn't know a single woman who could use a computer on type on a keyboard, but a few guys I knew could.
Maybe you had your eyes closed.

Re: Which version should be used instead of Windows Vista?

On a Chinese forum, someone wants to replace Windows with Linux on the following notebook: Windows Vista Service Pack 2 32-bit (in Chinese) Intel Core 2 Duo T5870 2.00 GHz 2 GB of RAM I have recommended Linux Mint 18.3 "Sylvia" - Cinnamon (32-bit) . Have I made a correct recommendation to them? It ...

His only problem is a bad Timeshift configuration, with snapshots being bigger than his root partition, so clearly he's got some other mount point included. That's the only thing that needs addressing here (as I mentioned several times above I...

If you are going to tell me to be careful please tell me specifically about what. A vague warning is useless. If you don't know what you should be careful about then perhaps making sure you have a backup stored well away from the machine is a good idea. I am not looking to wipe out the drive But yo...

The problem is you're dealing with a newcomer so you can't guarantee the safety of any data.

Data partition is NTFS because I want my Windows machine to be able to read it also (serves as second backup).
Windwoes 10 with Windows Services for Linux installed can do that without having the drive formatted as NTFS.

Re: Linux Mint 17.x reaches end of life in April

I'm old school I guess. No, I don't think so. You say it's working perfectly on a 2005 system. The risk you face by not upgrading can be weighed against the risk of upgrading. My view on machines and their OSen is that if the machine is doing what it was first intended to do then there is no reason...
