As a first step, install pavucontrol and use it to make sure your output device is selected.

There is no safe way. If you download a version for anything other than Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial), you're likely to end up with package dependency issues.

Re: Slow System

Also I find it cannot handle the load that Windows 7 did, for example if I have VLC running with a mp3 in the background, have two browsers open (Chromium and Firefox) each with 3 or 4 tabs and am browsing the Internet I find the system can stutter. I would recommend a lowlatency kernel, but others...

Re: Partitioned Drive, What does this Linux Mint message mean?

Nonsense. No, fact is, that NTFS is a proprietary file system. So that changes what I wrote in what way, exactly? And if no Windows exists, there is no sense to use it. I gave valid reasons for using it. Nobody said anything about there being no Windows. The very opposite, in fact... ... the data i...

Re: Using bcache and preload, need an SSD?

I used preload and prelink on Mint 18.2 KDE, which did make the system significantly faster. Prelinking killed every Cinnamon installation I tried it on. There's no point using bcache unless you want to make use of a tiny SSD. I can't vouch for the effectiveness of preload as I have 3.2GB/s NVMe.
