I have experienced this issue three or four times since 18.3. I run dual monitors and it only occurs on the secondary, and especially when Firefox Q is running.
See my response to the OP, above.

Re: Anyone else get flickering desktop backgrounds and windows periodically on NVIDIA cards in Cinnamon?

Smells like a driver issue or some sort of problem with Muffin + NVIDIA drivers, but every now and then, very rarely, will I get the background turning black and/or flickering, and sometimes various windows will do this as well. It's very rare as I said, and moving the mouse will get it to go away....

how I can correctly shrink my VirtualBox virtual disk? Did you empty the trash, remove unwanted programs and data then fill the unused space with zeroes? Was the disk created as dynamic? Did you follow a tutorial, if so, what one? I did all that you mentioned except for filling the unused space wit...

I found it very useful. -1 What about everyone else? I'm sorry if I had misunderstood you. In retrospect, I can see I probably over-reacted. Trying to answer your question I can only say that, if the Mint devs see merit in the suggestion they might adopt it; if not then they won't. I think you migh...

Re: Catweazel - over and out

Gee, thank you everyone. I didn't realise. Your words of encouragement are genuinely heart warming. Maybe my trip away will relax me a bit and I can return refreshed. It's nice to know I have so many genuine friends. I'll be back in very early August.

Everyone take care and stay safe.

Catweazel - over and out

Lately I've been making a lot of blunders, https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=1495720#p1495720 being the most recent. Clearly my age has got the better of me. I know. I proposed what I took to be the least risky route.

Well, there's no harm in trying because you can chown it back again.

Thank you for that. You're welcome. I normally prefer GUI interfacing, but if learning that solves my problem, then I'm going to learn how to use the rsync command. Seems like I always get dragged kicking and screaming into the terminal. I was the same but once I collected a few commands I found it...

The real problem is that it shouldn't be standard procedure.
especially when the iso is a few weeks old.
Ok, I concede it's probably worthwhile to do on a brand new release.

Is this a common problem? I haven't struck it before.
From the link you posted:

This bug affects 46 people

From go ogle:

About 37 results

I'd say that, no, it isn't common.

I find a disconnected install solves a lot of problems across many operating systems. It also helps isolate the cause of problems. Should be standard operating procedure.

I've found plenty of lists of basic shortcuts for Gnome/KDE, etc. but nothing I've found so far covers items such as Ctrl-Alt-F1 = VConsole, etc.
That pretty much covers it, except for perhaps alt-SysRq REISUB if your machine locks.

Re: Going back to LM 18.3

I ran LM 19 cinnamon version for about a week. Didn't have any problems other than it was slow to boot, and a lot of things just seemed to run slower to me. Kernel 4.15.0-24 is a source of major woes so it might pay to eliminate it as a possible cause, assuming you're running that kernel. You might...
