Re: Any other books comparable to "How Linux Works" by Ward...?

An excellent book that I learned a lot from is "A Practical Guide to Ubuntu Linux" by Mark G. Sobell. Particularly useful as Mint is based on Ubuntu. It's a 1300 page tome and starts you off at the beginner level, but has a lot of advanced material too. The only problem is that even the latest (four...

Re: The joys of living in Rural Areas

That's interesting. I read some time back that US domestic supplies were ususlly derived from a centre-tapped 110-120V supply giving a maximum of 55-60V either side, making it safer. This is how our site transformers work .. I have one, along with a box of 110V 60W bulbs for the lantern. I'll have ...

Re: The joys of living in Rural Areas

Are we talking 50A at 115V single phase or is it 3 phase. You could always try fitting a soft starter on the HVAC to reduce inrush current. Note my electrical engineering degree is over 40 years old, probably not the best person to offer advice :) He's probably talking about 50 amps at 240 volts si...

Re: Cinnamon just crashed

I see you have the same graphics adapter that I have. I also have a Gigabyte MB, though I have a different version and a different Intel CPU. I have found that I have to always use "nomodeset" to boot or else Cinnamon will usually crash. If you haven't already tried "nomodeset", try this: https://fo...

What is the default value so I can change it back in case I do not like it?
6500

EDIT: Use man redshift to see all the redshift options.

Re: Remember Brightness Settings

I control my screen brightness manually using redshift. You might consider it a disadvantage that the screen gets a more reddish tint when the brightness is turned down this way, but it works for me.

Re: Difficulties verifying ISO image

You don't put it into the /bin system folder owned by root. Put it into your ~/bin folder or your ~/.local/bin folder. Note ~stands for your home folder, so ~/bin is the same as /home/username/bin where username is your user name. For example, on my system, I put the file into /home/steve/bin. Both ...

Re: Difficulties verifying ISO image

Now this line is slightly different. Is there something wrong with the official instructions? See this explanation from "gm10": https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=291771#p1619558 The easiest way to do this, IMO, in Linux is to use a script file. So if I copy your script, what do I sa...

Re: question concerning how to verify iso images

Try this instead: gpg --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-key "27DE B156 44C6 B3CF 3BD7 D291 300F 846B A25B AE09" This is in my script file and has always worked for me. Also, you might want to try this script to automate the whole process: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=28317...

Re: Mint Mate 18.3 Timeshift SOLVED

Timeshift is a memory hog so even 16 GB will rapidly be filled. I have 8 snapshots that occupy 77 GB of an external SSD. That's surprising - I currently have 14 snapshots that only occupy 18GB total: steve@steve-Z97X ~ $ sudo bash -c "du -shc /media/root/LM18_timeshift/timeshift/snapshots/*" 9.2G /...

Re: Can't make sense of backintime

Unfortunately I couldn't make Backintime work on my PC. It never saw the external USB drive. Did you look in /media/<your user name> ? You wouldn't be the first to have this problem - quoted from another thread: "About the external HDD not showing up, I think it doesn't show up like it does in a fi...

Re: [SOLVED] Aptik

Hello, I've been testing BiT for a while now, do you know where I could find something like a dry run feature? Grsync, Timeshift have a dry run feature and I absolutely love that, not sure if it's available in BiT. Should be though, as all of them use rsync. I see that under Expert Options, there i...

Re: I do NOT miss winduhs!!

Off topic, but I couldn't resist  I still have an old LC Smith and Corona 811 typewriter that I was given when I went away to university in 1964. Plus, I still have a box of carbon paper - I dug that out to verify that I still had it and noticed that the top few sheets had been used (but still...

Re: [SOLVED] Aptik

I think the files ownership, group and permissions are stored on a separate file because you've Preserve ACL enabled. I could be wrong though. Full rsync is great but it's better to have backups in read-only mode, so I'm really confused which is better. I don't think having the Preserve ACL enabled...

Re: [SOLVED] Aptik

On a unrelated note, do you use a plugin to bulk upload images to postimage from your file manager? And is that Shutter you're using for screenshots? I'm just using the Screenshot program in Cinnamon. Menu>Accessories>Screenshot, and I've got a launcher for it on my panel. As for uploading those, I...

Re: [SOLVED] Aptik

I don't really back up everything on BIT - some of it gets backed up with TimeShift. I hope I'm getting everything, but I have never needed to use BIT to restore anything. I have used TimeShift to recover from a problem, and it worked fine. The only change that I could see that TS made during the re...

Re: Cinnamon just crashed (Tessa 19.1 as well as Sylvia 18.3)

"Cinnamon just crashed" into "Fallback Mode" after updates. This applies (at least) for 32 bit versions of Tessa 19.1 as well as for Sylvia 18.3. I can supply log files. (The 32 bit versions were installed on a 10 year old Packard Bell laptop that does function without hardware problems) Thanks on ...

Re: Hi there! New newbie with lots of questions here

However, it seems I have something up, related perhaps, that is of greater urgency: this morning I turned on my computer after having accepted a bunch of updates (including the most recent kernel one) and I got an alert saying a cinnamon file is terminally damaged (I am paraphrasing and translating...
