Re: I installed Cinnamon Edition but should I have gone with Mate instead ?

I tried both.
Mate version is the better version in my opinion.

Re: How to resuscitate a SSD from "initramfs"

VERY interesting! Mine is a Kingston V300 SSDNow as well (120GB) Can the firmware be updated without wiping the drive? I have never performed this task before. For Kingston "toolbox" it appears that only Windows is supported! None for iOs or Linux!! Unknown. Always assume your data will be destroye...

Re: How to resuscitate a SSD from "initramfs"

That an interesting tip. I have a Kingston SSDnow V300 240Gb drive which has stopped being recognised by any mobo firmware. Where did you get this voodoo from? A manufacturer? Chances are its dead but...I'll try this and report back as I have nothing to lose. Cheers UPDATE: * Apprarently this Brand/...

Re: Linux Mint 18.3 “Sylvia” MATE released!

Overall a great release. Mate version hits the sweet spot between XFCE & Cinnamon verisons beautifully. Until now I had resisted using Mint but as all other main stream distro's slide into a morass of instability Mint is an island of sanity. The lemming like rush over the SystemD/Wayland cliff will ...

Re: Re: Which Mint is the most stable?

I'm back on Mint typing this too you. This has sure been confusing. I realize I'm probably speaking too soon, but after I installed Trisquel, updated it, rebooted, and rebooted into Zorin, things seem to working again. My current theory is the crashes must have been effecting the boot record. Once ...

Re: Is Linuxmint really for seriously working people?

I've been an admirer & proponent of Linux for 20 years. Sad to say DESKTOP LINUX is still a disaster.
Its fine for setting up a little server but I'm giving up on it as a desktop & switching to Macs for desktop.

Re: mint 15 update manager problems

sudo -i (enter credentials) apt-get purge <package> apt-get autoremove apt-get update apt-get upgrade apt-get install <package> apt-get update apt-get upgrade This should get your package management system working again. The software updater in LM16 CANNOT BE TRUSTED. DO NOT ALLOW ANY LEVEL 3 UPDATE...

Open a terminal & type "hp-doctor" as a regular user. This will analyse the printer subsystem & offer to repair (missing libraries etc). I've had to use it on every LM 16 Cinnamon installation I have. Hope this helps you.

Re: Does the update manager has a mind of his own ?

Second to last update was CUPS (print related). After running the update print subsystem was borked & I had to use hp-doctor to repair the mess. Then this update to Cairo Dock. The now dock launches in 'Maintenance Mode' (whatever that is) & then closes. Great thanks dev's.. Twice in the last month ...

Re: Ubuntu's legal department asking Mint to pay Ubuntu Tax

There was already a topic about it: http://forum.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=152450&start=40. Wisely, the admin's/mod's decided to close the thread as it was getting out of hand. There's no reason to restart the same discussing here as this will be closed too. I was merely asking for a respo...

Ubuntu's legal department asking Mint to pay Ubuntu Tax

Source : http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20131209#qa In the article in Mint it is claimed that Clem has been asked by Ubuntu to start paying for access to the Ubuntu repositories. Clem claims he has been asked by Canonical's legal department to license the binary packages used by Ubuntu. To ...

Re: How do I "Map a network Drive" in Linux? [SOLVED]

1) KDE supports browsing network shares natively. What that means to you is once shares are mounted they can be browsed by any application program without problem . I recommend switching to Linux Mint KDE or Kubuntu. I installed Mint15 KDE recently on a test box but I'm not a KDE user any longer so...

Re: How do I "Map a network Drive" in Linux? [SOLVED]

Interesting. As I understand, a switch to KDE would require reinstalling Mint, or at least that's the prefered way to do it. Am I right? I have a Western Digital NAS here also, but this applies to any network share. In case I was unclear, in the Cinnamon or MATE (Gnome) desktop you can connect to &...

Re: How do I "Map a network Drive" in Linux? [SOLVED]

This might be better for the newbie forum, but it's a specific networking question. I'm new to Linux, running Mint 15 Cinnamon on my older HP laptop. I connect to my router via wireless. I have a WD MyBook Live NAS connected to the router as our family's primary file storage. It is mapped as Z: on ...

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

Clem I regard MATE & KDE the best DE's because they have PERSISTENT SETTINGS ! Speaking as a laptop user there is nothing more tedious than having to reset my sound back to an audible volume & reset my screen brightness back to a non blinding level every single time I have to login. MATE beats KDE i...
