Been using Linux in one form or another since I was 21. Now 44 and using Linux Mint exclusively on several systems since version 10 if memory serves.

Actually it's avahi-daemon these days. I tried the disabling cups browse approach and it didn't make a jot of difference. Disabling the avahi-daemon did.
This method worked on all seven of my Mint Cinnamon 20 computers.

Re: When I try to delete HP Smart Tank 550 it just reappears.

This is because of cups-browsed. To stop this behaviour of auto discovering printers and installing them do the following in a terminal.

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl stop cups-browsed

sudo systemctl disable cups-browsed

Re: Is it possible to use common downloads for 2 Mint machines for software updates?

No idea if this is possible in Mint but... I use my Linux firewall (IPFIRE) to cache updates through Update Accelerator. It's been into the distro. I have seven Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon computers on my network. Once one updates these are cached to the firewall disk. Once the next one requests the file...

Re: Early Christmas gift to me (Lemur Pro)

I'm glad you got a machine that you like! One reason is the graphics card on your new machine is Intel. Why on Earth anyone would make a Linux machine that uses an NVIDIA card is beyond me. Just a question really. I have more than a dozen Linux computers with nVidia graphics that are outstanding. W...

Re: Hyperviser?

OK, so ESXi provides a bare-metal virtualisation layer, within which multiple instances of operating systems can be configured and run. I would appreciate answers to a few quick questions which will help me decide if it is worth pursuing: 1. Is there any performance advantage (for the Windows boot)...

Thank you. May I impose on you with another query? Do both these commands give you scanning with the Canon? simple-scan "airscan:w3:CANON INC. TR4500 series" simple-scan "airscan:e0:Canon TR4500 series" Both commands do open Document Scanner with the Canon selected. Scanning doe...

Re: Fix for scanner not working on LM20 that worked on LM19

Simple/Document scanner does now recognize my Samsung and Cannon network scanners. Very pleasing that scanning works well for you with sane-airscan. I would be interested in the outputs for both devices given by scanimage -L and airscan-discover Obliged to give that info. scanimage -L device `escl:...

Great, that gives me something to look at!
Create a VMware account, then you can download and register (get a key) for free.

Re: Hyperviser?

Using ESXi here. I have several ESXi 6.0, 6.5 and 7.0 servers that run up to 20 different VM's. The one shown here I use mostly for game servers and experimenting with OS or software. https://i.ibb.co/0Qzb6xG/Screenshot-from-2020-09-07-08-13-42.png https://i.ibb.co/HpRD81x/Screenshot-from-2020-09-07...

Re: Fix for scanner not working on LM20 that worked on LM19

Users who wish to see driverless printing and scanning driverless restored to their machines can replace ippusbxd with ipp-usb . This may be obtained from https://github.com/alexpevzner/sane-airscan A direct link to the required file is https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/pzz/xUbuntu_2...

If you don't mind giving up a little disk space you can install XFCE and really any DE then switch it at the login screen. Cinnamon on odd days and XFCE on even days  . KDE for holidays maybe

Re: Linux that looks and feels like Windows 10?

Fhy the wuck would someone get all set up with a distro, including whatever learning curve they have to deal with, porting data, etc., just to make it look like the very OS they just left? Does that make sense to anybody? It sure doesn't make any to me. I can't help but agree. Completely agree!

Re: Samsung 860 Evo 2.5 inch SSD

I have that SSD, several other brands and NVMe drives in many, many Linux systems. Never run a single manual trim command on any of them and have no issues at all. All taken care of automatically by the system gremlins.
