A mini cd sounds good.
I would download Debian testing this way using netinst.
The iso was only about 175MB.
During the install you would select the packages needed and apt would do the rest.

OK I just went and formated the partition. Re-installed Mint. Everything went fine. The network manager applet in the Gnome menu had both wired and wireless enabled. gnome: mint menu--> adminsitration--> networking is the network manager. OR mintConfig --> Networking --> networking. I did use these. Enabled the wireless card and set the password. Intel Pro 2200 Wireless works with KDE Edition
The KDE Edition picked up the Intel 2200 right away. Just went into KnetworkManager and selected my dlink router. Connected with no problems. Linux Mint (Gnome) did not.
