How to make an exact copy of a disk's partitions without including extra free space?

Greetings! A little back-story: I am part of a team of people working on a robotics project, primarily surrounding the Raspberry Pi. (No, this isn't a "Pi" question.) I believe this question has value even outside the Raspberry Pi community. I ask here because we use Mint as our "primary" systems to...

Re: Thank you to those supporting others here!

A huge thank you to Clem for having the BALLS to stand up for what is right and tell Canonical to bugger off when they tried to slip a back-door installer into the repos. Viz.: ZDNet article: Linux Mint dumps Ubuntu Snap https://www.zdnet.com/article/linux-mint-dumps-ubuntu-snap/ where Clem discusse...

Re: Electron, Chromium and Cannonical - oh Snap!

Thanks! What I meant was that Electron has a dependency on Chromium and if Chromium isn't installed, then Electron won't work. Right? I know that Chromium doesn't "depend" on snap. Snap is a convenient way to "install" Chromium, somewhat similar to a deb or rpm installer package. My thought was that...

Re: Electron, Chromium and Cannonical - oh Snap!

I'm confused. Electron depends on Chromium. Supposedly, now Chromium depends on Snap You're reading far too much into the meaning of 'depends', and that's probably where your confusion stems from, but only you can sort that out. Ref: The following URLs: 1. The Electron development environment, run ...

Electron, Chromium and Cannonical - oh Snap!

Greetings! Ref: The following URLs: 1. The Electron development environment, run by GitHub: (https://www.electronjs.org/) Electron uses Chromium and Node.js so you can build your app with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. 2. Re: Warning: Critical issue in base-files 19.0.2 update

This is why when I tell people about Linux, I tell them about Linux MINT . Mistakes happen, we all get that. What I like is that when something DOES happen, Clem steps right up, takes ownership, makes it right, and (most important in my opinion), he doesn't hide behind a bunch of smoke-and-mirrors. ...

I have tested and tested and found that mint 19.3 & mint 20 & lmde4 all do usb file transfers about 40-50% slower than mint 18.3 (all xfce/thunar, except lmde4 )
Interesting!

They must have created a regression in the latest updates.

What module would someone enter a bug against to report it?

"Overlay" Linux partition to reinstall?

Ref: My corollary post at https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=326268 Given the following system configuration: HP laptop with a 2T SSD, partitioned into Windows and Linux Mint partitions among others, (like swap) Assume both Windows and Linux installations work and the system is set up...

Making a drive-to-drive file copies work faster?

Greetings! Background : My system is a dual-boot arrangement with both Windows and Linux Mint - currently Mint 19.3. I use the Windows installation for the work I do, (which involves a lot of installing, testing, changing, uninstalling, re-installing, etc. etc. etc.), and the Linux installation to h...

Re: "Run as root" as a right-click menu item?

All good ideas and I had not known about the current right-click functionality. Some apps that simply don't work if not run as root include things like Gparted. <side question> I do not understand why an app that simply won't work without root, doesn't explicitly request root privilege when launched...

"Run as root" as a right-click menu item?

Greetings! I know, I know, I can hear the "Oh WAAAA! Silly boy doesn't like the Command Line? Cry me a RIVER!!" Suggestion: Implement some kind of right-click functionality that performs the equivalent of the "run as Administrator" found on certain forever nameless non-free operating systems. ======...

Do you have it full-size? A4 or Letter is acceptable, but a D or E size print would be best.

Re: Thank you to those supporting others here!

Update: This last week one of my wife's relatives came by with a laptop that had the Windows-8 "virus".  She complained about how slow and difficult to use it had become and wanted my help. I had a choice: 1. Upgrade to the Win-10 "virus". 2. Install Mint. Actually I could have reinstal...

Re: Thank you to those supporting others here!

Personally i would like to say my congrats to ALL of you (users, moderators, admins and so on) for having a non toxic environment 8) +1. (Actually + ten zillion!) Up until now, I've never needed more than one user, so this is (relatively) new territory for me.

I'll try what you suggest and see what happens.

Thanks!

Re: Create a user with absolutely no admin capability?

This is different than the original user created during installation?

AFAIK, user (users?) I create inherit these capabilities by default - or do I misunderstand this?

Create a user with absolutely no admin capability?

Greetings! Question: I want to install Mint on a system for my 8 and 10 y/o granddaughters. However, I want to create a user(s) for them that is completely devoid of ANY administrative capabilities whatsoever. No "sudo". No "enter your password to change system features". No updates. No Synaptic. Ju...
