Re: dpms ... has anyone had a similar problem / solution?

I realized that there was one change. Previously I used the nvidia drivers because the nouveau drivers didn't set up with multiple screens. This time, when I installed Mint they popped into life so I decided to go with the Open Source option. Wrong choice sadly. Today I installed the Nvidia 340 driv...

Re: Wine 3.0

There are instructions for Wine 3.0 at winehq.

I've been running 2.21 which is the staging release but I just updated to the stable release which is 3.0. Seems good so far.

Be aware that the devel & staging releases are earlier versions so you do need the stable release if you want 3.0 :)

Re: Linux Mint 18.3 KDE freezes

Not KDE. Standard Mint 18.3. Seems to freeze up after power management turns the screens off (for 20+ minutes).

Re: dpms ... has anyone had a similar problem / solution?

Having switched that off I had left a 30 minute timeout for Mint to turn the screen off.

It did.

Everything locked up. The only difference between the system now and for the last couple of years was a clean Mint 18.3 install. Any ideas?

Solved dpms screen off with Nouveau causes lock up

I did a fresh install of Mint 18.3 this weekend then copied some data across from a backup home directory. Its going great. Really fast to boot & shutdown. All my systemd stuff working. One small problem. I use a hotkey to run a line (using xbindkeys) to put my monitors to sleep. The original was th...

Re: Skype Alpha released (new build coming)

I'm running skype alpha and looking to move off it. If they drop peer to peer for a MS cloud I get more uncomfortable about who'll share my information. So I'm looking for a replacement. I thought it would probably be Jitsi because I wonder about Google voice and video and I wonder how Facebook will...

Re: What Happened to JITSI in Mint 18?

It is a confusing list. Go to the bottom and choose: jitsi_2.8.5426-1_amd64.deb assuming you don't want the 32 bit version. That set up the Jitsi I knew from Mint 17. I found https://meet.jit.si/ to be an interesting option for those of us who need to videoconference with less computer literate fami...

[Solution] Mint 18 Doesn't Work with Logitech C525 Microphone

My Sound panel shows only one input device, the microphone for the HD Webcam C525 and looks exactly as it did when it worked in Linux Mint 17. But Skype didn't hear it and Audacity was also unable to pick up sound. I found the other thread on the board and applied the suggestions. I tried installing...

Re: Suggestions for audio book software - remember played to position

VLC Media Player can remember the position in both audio and video files.

Kodi also has a good audiobook add-on. http://kodi.wiki/view/Add-on:AudioBooks

Re: Problem with Banshee 2.6.3 and LM18 Cinnamon

Hi Total_Blue, I can't read the start and stop points on your picture but in the past Banshee has had these problems because of SQLite database issues. I note that your SQLite is 3.11 and the current source is 3.13. You might consider either an ubuntu 16.04 compatible PPA with a more recent version ...

Re: cron error

Sudo crontab -e lets you change your root level cron file so you need to be able to do it from user level. You'll find your crontabs file in /var/spool/cron/crontabs I'd suggest changing the permissions on that folder and your file to provide yourself with Create & Delete plus Read and Write permiss...

Re: Mint 18 Shutdown Scripts

I did more research and combined a good tutorial on systemd with some discussion on service files that could be used for shutdown scripts to create a working systemd solution. Once you have it, its simpler than the SysVinit approach really. I documented it in a blog if anyone is searching for a good...

What makes you think that pulling the cable will work.

You've got to power it off and smash the hdd as well @fungus.

Mint 18 Shutdown Scripts

At reboot or shutdown I save the contents of my ramdisk for next boot.

In 17.3 I used the standard approach (save an executable script in etc/init.d, and symlink to rc.0 and rc.6). I tried this in 18 and it didn't work?

How should we do this now?

I guess the silence means it's a bug somewhere.

Re: WINE

I've been happily using wine for years.

Try out the application in wine. It may be fine.

If not you can upgrade to wine 18 by googling for the Ubuntu ppa. I'm running it for a couple of enhancements.

LM 18 x64 Cinnamon: Cursor won't blink

I installed LM18 on Saturday. Clean install on new root and home partitions. Beautiful. Love the new theme. Spent time setting things up. All good then realised that I couldn't see the block cursor in Terminal when I left spaced to edit a command. It took me a while to realize it wasn't blinking. So...

Re: LMDE2 32bit Fails to start

I had similar issues on Debian Jessie in the past. I use nvidia's drivers and if anything gets screwed up you have to do a command line video driver reinstall to get clean. I could never resolve my problems with quiet splash but others seem to have. A reinstall of your OS should fix it too. You need...
