Re: Updates to 18.2: what happens if I update?

Oh, Okay. I don’t remember installing anything MATE, but I am not so sure it never happened, so it must have gone that way. I thought these mate components were belonging to the 18.2 update, hence the title. Speaking of 18.2, will I instead see things differently? I mean, different display manager a...

Re: Updates to 18.2: what happens if I update?

Thanks Pjotr, First of all, I didn’t know the difference between gksudo and sudo, aside from the obvious popup window for the password. I don’t think I ever used it on this system for graphical programs, to be honest I don’t know. Is there a way to check? The document says you "may end up…which can ...

Updates to 18.2: what happens if I update?

I’ve always been keen on updates, since Maya 13, but now with the latest one I sincerely don’t know what to do. I’ve got now these MATE looking files, that update manager wants me to install https://s19.postimg.org/f29hxdv33/Screenshot_from_2017-09-01_08-21-52.png but: For example, do I really need ...

Re: At bootup, memtest flashes and then blank screen.

and in fact… I better checked this morning, and yes — that’s the monitor! When I wrote that switching it off/on wasn’t sorting any effect, it was because I was too impatient: in fact, I tried today after a few second and didn’t work, but then when Linux was already loaded, it was already enough to m...

Re: At bootup, memtest flashes and then blank screen.

Little update:
this morning I tried with the USB live key, and got the same effect. No Fast Boot options in the BIOS setup.
Now, I will try to change the graphics card as I’ve been given one recently, I just need to upgrade the PSU first as 400W aren't enough for it.

If it's the same behavior, that would remove your installed OS and associated drivers, as the culprit. This would narrow it down to the video card, or the monitor.

Joe
Oh, Okay, that makes sense! Will do it tomorrow morning.
Thanks!

... the monitor doesn’t say no-signal or similar, so I presume that the computer is sending some sort of (blank) signal. I see your point. This could suggest the video card is the issue then. As if it "wasn't ready" from a cold boot when the OS was, as it is technically a peripheral, but is when it...

Re: At bootup, memtest flashes and then blank screen.

No, I don’t have any time to do anything, it just goes blank right away. For clarity, are you saying that the issue is occurring at the POST stage, prior to Linux Mint even booting? I'm sorry if I missed that fact. Joe Yes, exactly, I am at the Amibios American Megatrends step, I barely have the ti...

Re: At bootup, memtest flashes and then blank screen.

Care to explain better, please?
So do you think it is a hard drive failing?
If not, I don’t understand how my data can be in danger with a faulty RAM stick or some approaching failure on the onboard graphics, for example.

Re: At bootup, memtest flashes and then blank screen.

This happens every morning, with a "cold" computer. I have to start it twice. If that were my machine I'd be preparing to fork out for a new one and backing up my treasured stuff. well… if that’s a stupid thing I wouldn’t change the whole computer. Do you change the whole car for say… a pierced coo...

[SOLVED] At bootup, memtest flashes and then blank screen.

It’s been a while now that at bootup my computer starts, the memtest flashes for half second or so, and then everything goes blank. The LED of the monitor remains green, the computer starts regularly, as after a couple of minutes (to be sure) I can just enter my login and I can hear the welcome soun...

[Solved] Reverting auto login to standard login (18.2 Cinn.)

Hi, I installed yesterday night on a VM 18.2 Cinnamon with the intention of testing it, and when it came to the point in which I had to chose whether to have auto login or not, I went for that, realising later that one of the new features I wanted to test was actually the new login. Now, while in MD...

Why search prompts when I save a file?

OK, I’ve always wondered this, and hope there is a way to ditch this useless feature that bothers me since Maya, I think. When I save a file (from Firefox here, I can’t remember saving files from anywhere else, maybe Thunderbird) at times this annoying search feature pops up as soon as I start typin...

So, there’s no longer need of writing you in PM :) I don’t really need it (or at least I don’t know yet that I need it :D ) but I was really curious about the syntax of that entry, how it works. It’s useful if something goes wrong in the pc and need to access it from a live system, but on the HD! I ...
