Re: X370 motherboards and linux

The thing to remember is this: Ryzen is a brand new product and totally redesigned processor. Yes, some things might take a while until they work. That doesn't mean other things can't be broken permanently. Or require manual intervention :/ Could you post your cpu version? My randomly rebooting one...

Re: How to disable annoying 'close window' laptop function key?

Use xev to find out what exactly pressing that key does. Try to disable the shortcut for that key in your window manager settings. Try to change the key using xmodmap Read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Extra_keyboard_keys Buy new usb-keyboard / laptop. Repeat until keyboard is perfect or you...

Re: X370 motherboards and linux

Thanks! Also: Craaaaap... I was just about to accept that that thing is broken for everyone and I can finally stop looking for ways to fix it T_T Is there a place where people are making systematic progress locating the problem by now or is everything still one huge steaming mess where everyone trie...

Re: X370 motherboards and linux

ASUS Prime x370 works fine for me. Sorry to barge in, but did you mean "it works fine except for the usual Ryzen problems"? Or can you confirm that you have no random reboots / freezes / etc with that board - at all ? And it's been running for some time (let's say 500+ hours just to be reasonably s...

Re: RAID 0 Setup Guidance Help

First of all... NOw..: 1) How are you "Inspecting" md0? Have you mounted it somewhere? Does it even have a filesystem on it? Can you write to it as root? 2) Ignore that for now. Automount might do strange stuff. 3) If I remember right, md0 should not stop existing unless you disassemble the array or...

Re: Mint way - permanently mount readonly fs

Thanks! Just wanted to get an idea of what's likely or unlikely to happen because I'm probably going to see that machine for a year or something (unless it breaks). Guess I'll just assume then that a potential automatic update will choose the conservative option and not replace manually changed file...

Re: Disable UUID in grub.

Does mint's grub parse old / previously generated config files that it shouldn't when generating the new grub.cfg or something like that? I temporarily moved the content of /etc/grub.d away and regenerated /boot/grub/grub.cfg (resulting in an emtpy cfg). Then I moved the script files back to grub.d ...

Re: Disable UUID in grub.

The grub.cfg that gets generated still contains device UUIDs. ( But I can't rely on the UUIDs of my partitions to stay the same. ) Replace the default GRUB with the legacy GRUB :) -DataMan Thanks, but I don't really want to use legacy grub as a workaround. This should work fine in grub2 too (and doe...

Re: RAID 0 Setup Guidance Help

What exactly doesn't work? Did you try to manually assemble the array? This isn't really aimed at mint, but you should be able to find a lot of hints there anyway: edit: oops, wrong link. This one should a less specific point to start out from: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/RAID (.. than this...

Re: Disable UUID in grub.

OK, let me be more specific: I really don't want the UUID of my partitions written in stone anywhere where it breaks the system if I swap my hd with a clone / backup and also I'm planning to use the image on multiple identical PC's. Internal use of "dynamic" UUID's in various random places is fine o...

Re: Is there a "roll back" snapshot function in Mint14, Mate

This sounds like an XY Problem. If something breaks, find out why and how to fix it. "Rolling back" isn't going to get you anywhere - there are close to no problems a linux machine can't recover from even without external means and if you have a basic boot cd around so you can chroot into what's lef...

[solved] Disable UUID in grub.

Hi! I have replaced UUID entries in fstab with device entries, added "GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true" to /etc/default/grub. The grub.conf that gets generated still contains device UUIDs. The mint 14 files in /etc/grub.d look, as if they might not respect that option, I don't really understand the whol...

Re: Mint way - permanently mount readonly fs

Thanks! no you do not have to blacklist it ( although I don't know what that means ) Well, I don't really know much about mint yet. Just an example: If mint were switching to systemd in a few months, without any customizations the drive would be likely to pop up under /media/UUID or /media/label, mo...

Re: Awful DE pferformance / Desktop freezes on high HD load

I'm using nouveau... don't see any problems with it. Looks more as if it's the HD, because it still happens in TTY if I kill X. Even logging into a second TTY takes a long time. Looks like bad IO scheduling... like one process (usually the first one started as root?) can hog all the I/O and everythi...

[solved]Mint way - permanently mount readonly fs

Hi! I need to mount a drive read-only and read-only only... don't want it to pop up on the desktop at some point with write access... or automounted anywhere else. And I don't want it to disappear either. Can I just add it to fstab and assume that that's dealt with or do I have to blacklist it somew...

Awful DE pferformance / Desktop freezes on high HD load

Hi! I just installed and fully updates mint cinnamon 14, everything should be stock, close to no customizations. The Desktop performance is awful, everything freezes while hd / disk I/O is high (p.E.: while I wipe free disk space with secure-delete or even just while the package manager is performin...

Re: live cd - deactivate broken spindown or energy safing

That could have been it... no good way to test that now though. I thought pm-utils were deprecated... will Mint still be using those for a long time?

Hmm, well... is there a sysfs file or something to check the status of pm-powersave? What documentation I found for that stuff wasn't really good...

Re: live cd - deactivate broken spindown or energy safing

I'm using the mint 14 / cinnamon boot image. There is no such thing as a "power save settings" unless you mean the "power setting" which has only two options ("hibernate" and "don't") or the "Brightness Settings" which are disabled (and probably unrelated). Can anyone tell me what module / daemon or...

live cd - deactivate broken spindown or energy safing

Hi! I'm trying to wipe a HD prior to installation using dd... but if I leave the machine unattended for a while, the transfer rate goes down from 20 to 3MB/s... if then I move the mouse again, I hear the live cd spinning up again and transfer rate to the HD goes back up, too. What's doing this / How...
